Before the war

He was born on 21 March 1830 (11; 4 (35 in 1864), 6 (40 in 1870), 7 (50 in 1880)). He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (4, 6, 7, 11).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district (1, 4). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (4). He was a private in company F (1, 12-13).

He was discharged by general order on 1 June 1864 or 20 June 1865 (1, 3 [1 Jun 64], 5 [20 Jun 65]). He was a private, in company F (12-13).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Jane, and with Alice, Johnson, Arnold, and Martha (presumably their children) (6). He was a farmer, and owned $1,200 in real estate and $300 in personal property (6).

In 1880, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Martha, his children Johnson and Arnold, a servant, and with Melissa Collins (7). He was a farmer (7).

On 15 September 1886, he successfully applied for a pension (10).

In 1890, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (5). He received a pension, because of a disease of the rectum (5).

On 12 September 1899, he died, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (11). He was buried in Mount Zion Christian Cemetery - Chaneysville, in Chaneysville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (2, 11).

On 24 October 1899, his widow, Martha J Tewell, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (9, 10).

In 1900, his widow, Martha J Tewell, was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (8). She was living with her son Arnold and his family (8).

On 3 April 1903, his widow, Martha Jane Lashley Tewell, died (11). She was buried in the Mount Zion Christian Cemetery - Chaneysville, Chaneysville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (11).
