Before the war

He was born in 1831/32 (2 (29 in 1861), 4 (29 in 1861), 5 (18 in 1850)). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 4, 5).

In 1850, he was living in the 6th ward, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was not working (5).

When he enlisted, he was a butcher (2, 4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (2, 4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 November 1861(1, 2, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1). He was mustered in a private in company H, by George Black (1, 2, 6-8). He had gun number 88 (4).

He was discharged at Camp Stanton, Alexandria, Virginia, on 7 May 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability, because of imperfect vision (1, 2, 3, 4).

When discharged, he had last been paid through 28 February 1862 (2). He was paid $28.16 for the period from 1 March through 5 May 1862 (at $13.00 per month) (2). He received $2.60 for three days' travel from Alexandria to Philadelphia, and $3.00 for food for the trip (2). He had not drawn $20.47 of his clothing allowance, but had been advanced $42.30 for clothing (2). He received a total of $11.93 (2). He was a private, in company H (6-8).
