Before the war

He was born on 10 July 1839 (8, 12; 2 (25 in 1865), 6 (20 in 1860), 7 (40 in 1880), 8 (60 in 1900), 9 (10 in 1850)). He was born in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12). He was born to John J Topper and Martha Magdalena Sanders (12).

In 1850, he was living in Carroll County, Maryland (9). He was living with John and Martha Topper (9). He had attended school within the year (9).

In 1860, he was living in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (6). He was a laborer (6). He was living with John and Martha Topper (presumably his parents) (6).

In 1863/65, he married Julia Ann Krise (8, 12). They had nine children (12):

When he was enlisted, he was a laborer (2).

His younger brother, Pius Francis Topper, also served in the Civil War, but in the Confederate Cavalry (11) He served in the 6th Virginia Cavalry, fought at Fairfield on 3 July 1863, and was killed at Luray, Virginia, on 22 September 1864 (11).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 2, 3, 4 [64]). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (2). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (2). He was a private in company A (1, 13).

He was mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 3, 4). He was a private, in company A (13).

After the war

Based on their children's birthplaces, they moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland sometime around 1868/70 (7).

In 1870, he was living in Emmitsburg District, Frederick County, Maryland (10). He was a farmer, and owned $2700 in real estate, and $650 in personal property (10). He was living with his wife Julia and four children (10).

In 1880, he was living in Emmitsburg District, Frederick County, Maryland (7). He was a farmer (7). He was living with his wife Julia, nine children, and his father John (7).

On 6 December 1889, he applied successfully from Maryland for a pension (3, 5).

In 1890, he was living in Emmittsburg District, Frederick County, Maryland (4).

In 1900, he was living in Emmitsburg District, Frederick County, Maryland (8). He was a farmer (8). He was living with his wife Julia, and three children (8). Julia had had three children, all of whom were living (8).

He died on 19 October 1903, in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland (12).
