When he enlisted, he was a roofer (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 26 January 1864 (1, 3). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Burk (3). He was a private, in company A (1, 10-11).

On 27 June 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 May 1865 (1, 2).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1). He was a corporal, in company A (10-11).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Bertha and son Henry (8). He was a tin roofer, and owned $1,000 in personal property (8).

In 1880, his wife, Bertha Volkmer, was living at 1110 Collar Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). (I have not yet found him.) She was living with her children Henry, William, and George, and a boarder (9). She was a seamstress (9).

He died on 9 May [?] 1889 (4).

In 1890, his widow, Bertha M Volkmar, was living either at 1237 Marlborough Street (5) or at 638 E Girard Avenue (6), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She had a boarding house (6). She had lost his discharge papers (5).

On 12 July 1890, his widow, Bertha Volkmar, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 7).
