When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster. HIs service was credited to the 16th Congressional District. He was a private in company G. [sources: 1, 2, 4, 6, 18]

He received clothing worth $38.35. [source: 2]

He deserted on 20 June 1865 near Washington DC. He was a private, in company G. [sources: 1, 2, 6, 18]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Christian and Elisabeth Weigel (presumably his parents), with George (presumably his brother), and with a servant. He was a farm laborer. [source: 9]

In 1870/71, he married Emma Jane Zeiglar. She was born in 26 June 1850, in Pennsylvania, to Thomas Zeiglar and Margaret Miller. They apparently had these children:

On 16 October 1889, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 4, 6]

In 1890, he was living in Tyrone, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office: Menallen). [source: 4]

In 1900, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Emily E, children John, Charles, and Edward, and a boarder. He was a farmer. [source: 11]

On 30 August 1908, he died, in Mt Holly Springs Borough, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He died of arteriosclerosis and fatty degeneration of heart (duration 2 years). He was a farmer. In 1910, his widow, Emily J Weigle, was living in Mt Holly Springs Borough, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [source: 15]

On 10 August 1919, his widow, Emily Jane Weigle, died, in Carlisle Borough, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She died of valvular heart disease, with chronic Brights disease (2 years duration) contributing.
