Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in October 1836, to William Wispert and Susan [unknown family name]. In 1850, he was living in ward 5, Kensington, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with William and Susan (presumably his parents), and with Sarah, Emeline, James, Andrew, and William H (presumably siblings). He had not attended school within the year. [source: 13]

In 1860, he was living in ward 18, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (post office Kensington). He was living with William and Susan (presumably his parents), and with James, Andrew, and Alonza (presumably siblings). He was a glassblower. [source: 14]

When he enlisted, he was a glassblower. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and black hair. [source: 2]

During the war

His father, William Wispert, and brother, James Wispert, also served in the 91st.

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 or 10 October 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Zinn (2). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1). He had rifle number 106 (2). [sources: 1 (8 Oct), 2 (10 Oct), 8 (8 Oct), 19]

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. [source: 7]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer. [source: 1]

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. [source: 1]

In March 1865, he provided an affidavit about James Thompson, affirming that while at the First Division Hospital at City Point, Virginia, he saw Thompson die, and attended his funeral. [source: 9]

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 8, 19]

After the war

On 13 July 1865, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 6, 8]

On 7 May 1866, he married Margaretta Crozier. She was born in 1842/43, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were married by G G Bakerstraw [?], of the Pitman Methodist Episcopal Church, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a glassblower. Their children seem to include:

In 1870, he was living in Bridesburg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Margaret. He was a glass blower. [source: 3]

In 1880, he was living on Venango Street, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Margaret, and children May and Walter. He was a glass blower. [source: 4]

In 1900, he was living on Hope Street, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his sister Sarah Tewry [?], and with Mary Buck (Sarah's? daughter). He was a glass blower. He had been out of work for ten months in the previous year. He was a widower. [source: 5]

He again applied for a pension on 18 February 1907. [source: 6]

On 18 November 1907, he died, at 1517 East Montgomery Avenue, ward 18, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of gastroenteritis, with exhaustion contributing. He was a glassblower, and was married. Members of the Crescent Athletic Club were invited to his funeral, which was held from his late residence, 1517 East Montgomery Avenue.
