Paczos Lineage

Paczos

In the Am-Pol Eagle's article "Origins & meanings of surnames in Buffalo Polonia," the name Paczos  is one of the names analyzed. This came as a complete surprise to me.  The surname is associated with the root paczes, "flax and hemp fibers" (the surname Paczos was probably for someone who worked with that type of material and lists the similar Paczosa as a surname as early as 1444.  There are 644 people surnamed Paczos in Poland along with 287 Paczosa with 181 in the district of Bilgoraj where both my parents came from.
John L. Paczos

Lawrence Paczos

Lawrence was born on April 8, 1887 in Dabrowice, Russia (part of Poland that was given to Russia by Catherine the Great in 1797).  It became Poland again after World War I in 1919.  In 1797, Poland was divided between Russia, Prussia and Austria.  The town is in the Province of Lublin and is in the Powiat (Administrative District or County) of Bilgoraj.  This is the area that my mother came from.

Mother:    Kathryn (do not know maiden name)

Father:    John - came to the United States in 1900 when Lawrence was 17 years old.  John was a village clerk or tax collector and the reason he came to this country was the he was accused of stealing money.  He worked here for a couple of years to make money so he could go back to Poland to clear his name.  He died somewhere in Russia.

Note:  John L. Paczos has a large portrait of his Grandfather that was made while in the U.S. circa 1900s.  (See Photo Album) Don't know where he lived or worked or when he arrived and when he left but I assume it was somewhere in the Buffalo area because I don't know how my father would have gotten this portrait.  I will continue to try and find my Grandfather at Ellis Island but this will be difficult as I have so little to go on and his name was obviously misspelled.

Family:    Sisters:  The oldest sister (name unknown but thought to be Sophia or Zocia.)  Natalia "Nasta" - 2nd oldest sister.  Was married twice.  Second time to Czosda.  Mary - youngest sister.  Married to Mawicza.

Note:  John L. Paczos has in his possession the Russian passport of Lawrence Paczos that was issued December 18, 1910 by (Russian translation) Pushcha-Solskim Hmintskim administration, at the region of Belhorajsk, in the Province of Lublinsk.  It showed that it was issued to Lawrentij Ivanivich Pachos.
