Ruth Whitecotton and Jacob Hudson Family

I know very little about Ruth Whitecotton. And what I do know is a bit scattered.

Her maiden name is given in her marriage record [which I have not seen personally]:

www.familysearch.org, Ruth WHITECOTTEN m. Jacob HUDSON 17 SEP 1817, Champaign, Ohio.

The odd thing is that I can find no other "Whitecottons" in the area at the time. This strikes me as troublesome. Working backward, this would appear to be the same Jacob Hudson and wife in the 1820 Champaign County, Ohio census, 1830 Marion County, Indiana and the 1840 Hancock County, Indiana census, which ties readily with the other Hudsons in the area in 1850.

Another striking issue is that no census record can be found for Ruth from 1850-1870. We do know that she was alive because she does appear, finally, in the 1880 record of her daughter Emerine in Hancock County:
1880 Hancock County, Indiana
Vernon Township, S.D. 3, E.D. 191, Page No. 29/46A

line 25, 235/241 JACKSON George WM 47 M Farmer Indiana N.C. N.C.
Emerine WF 48 Wife Keeping House Indiana Ohio Tenn
Steven D WM 19 Son S works on Farm Indiana Ind. Ind.
Charles WM 17 Son S works on Farm Indiana Ind. Ind.
Joseph WM 14 Son S works on Farm Indiana Ind. Ind.
HUDSON Ruth WF 90 motherinlaw Tennessee Tenn. N.C.
From a reference to her in a letter home from the Civil War, George W. Hudson infers that Ruth was still living in or near Hancock County, Indiana:
"I also got a letter from Mother at the same time that said she was 70 years old on the 12th of last Sept. I will not have time to answer her letter, you can tell her."
Elender Carr Hudson lived in Hancock County, Indiana at the time and I'm understanding "tell" to mean talk to her, not to write her. It seems to me he would have said "write" her if that's what he meant. But it's not much to go on! And what an odd way to have gotten her birthdate...

In any case, no headway has been made on finding her parents or siblings.
