My family tree

Annie McGuire

Annie is my great grandmother.

She was born Annie McGuire in Scotland about 1860, the daughter of George McGuire, a Commercial Traveller. Annie came to Dublin before 1876, and lived at 1 Brennan's Terrace (now called Portland Row), part of the North Circular Road.

She married Benjamin Palmer on 14 October 1876 in the Convent Chapel in the parish of St Agatha's, North William Street, Dublin. (Her maiden name was spelt Maguire on the marriage certificate). The marriage notice in the Irish Times read:

PALMER and M'GUIRE - At the Church of St. Agatha, North William Street, by the Rev. R. Carrick, Benjamin Palmer, 77 Frankfort Terrace, Lower Gloucester Street, to Annie, second daughter of George M'Guire, Esq, Edinburgh.

They had four children, of whom three were alive in 1911 - Benjamin Norman, (my grandfather), George Christopher and Anne Mary. The fourth child, Edward Joseph, died in 1883, aged 10 months.

Benjamin and Annie first lived at 26 Lower Gloucester Street (now called Sean Macdermott Street), Dublin before moving to 21 Charelevile Avenue, North Strand. About 1886, they moved to 25 Portland Row, Fairview, where they lived here until 1906. By 1911 Benjamin and Annie were living at 13 Derrynane Parade, Phibsboro, Dublin.

I believe that her husband ran a wholesale salt business in Dublin, helped by Anne, her daughter, and Alban, her grand-nephew.

Annie died on 04 September 1931 and is buried with her husband in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin (St Patrick's MM105).
