Mary D'Arcy

Mary Loughnan is my great grandmother.

She was born Mary D'Arcy in County Carlow about 1836 (from the 1901 Census). Mary may have been baptised on 16 August 1840, the daughter of Thomas Darcy and Ally Murphy, although the evidence to support this theory is not strong.

Mary married James Loughnan on 08 February 1858 in Tullow, Co. Carlow. Her address is shown in the parish register as Main Street, Tullow. The couple had a number of children, including Mary Anne, Margaret, Henrietta, Esther, Philip Francis, James, John, Josephine (my grandmother) and Mary Eliza.

James and Mary ran a provisions store and bakery at 3-4 Slaney Place, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford from before 1874.

Mary died in Enniscorthy on 19 May 1907 and is buried in the grounds of St Aidens Cathedral, Enniscorthy.

The Enniscorthy Guardian carried the following obituary in the edition dated Saturday 25 May 1907:

LOUGHNAN - on May 19th 1907 at her residence Slaney-place, Enniscorthy, Mary, beloved wife of James Loughnan. Funeral took place on Tuesday 22 inst. at Cathedral Cemetery after High Mass and Office. Fortified by the rites of the Catholic Church. R.I.P.
