 ROBERT J. GREGG.

It is always pleasant and profitable to contemplate the career of a man who has made a success of life and
won the honor and respect of his fellow citizens. Such is the record of Robert J. Gregg, who was born near
California, Washington county, on the 22d of August, 1852, and is a son of Robert and Mary (West) Gregg. The
father was born in 1808 in East Pike Run township, Washington county, and died in 1874 near California, where
he had followed the vocation of farming. He was a member of the Presbyterian church at Coal Center,
Pennsylvania, and supported the democratic party. His parents, William and Ruth (Jackman) Gregg, were
natives of Ireland. Mary West was born near California in 1812 and died in 1890. She was a daughter of
Jonathan and Margaret West, the former of whom was a farmer, a member of the Presbyterian church, and died
at his home near California.

Robert J. Gregg was educated in the public schools of East Pike Run township and remained on the home
farm with his father until twenty-two years of age, when, in 1874, he engaged in the coal business, opening a
mine on his father's farm. He was successful in that enterprise and has continued to be identified with the coal
business during all of the subsequent years. For several years he has served as superintendent of Leadbetter
Company, besides looking after his own mining interests. He is an active and energetic man despite his years and
is highly regarded by all with whom he is associated. Politically he has always given his support to the democratic
party and has cooperated with his fellow citizens in every movement or enterprise for the upbuilding or better¬
ment of his community. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, to which he gives liberal support.

Mr. Gregg has been married three times, first, in Pittsburgh, to Miss Sarah Crowthers, who was born and
reared in Monongahela and died at California.  She was the daughter of Jonas and Anne (Coatsworth)
Crowthers, and became the mother of four children, namely: Birdie C., who is living in California; Lulu E., who
died March 4, 1924; Mary Ann, who lives at Claysville, Washington county; and Howard R., who lives in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  For his second wife Mr. Gregg chose Miss Kate West, a native of Washington
county and a daughter of Jonathan and Malinda (Gregg) West. Her father was a veteran of the
war. Mrs. Gregg died, leaving one child, Kate, who is now living in Pittsburgh. Some time after the death of
his second wife, Mr. Gregg married Miss Sarah M. Wolfe, who was born near Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania,
March 16, 1851, a daughter of William C. and Malinda (Smallwood) Wolfe. Her father was born near Belle
Vernon and died at Roscoe, Pennsylvania.  He was a school teacher by vocation, was aligned with the
democratic party and was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mrs. Gregg, who was educated
in the public schools of Washington county, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the Ladies Aid
Society, while her political support is given to the republican party. Mr. Gregg is a genial and friendly man,
though entirely unassuming in manner, and because of his splendid qualities of head and heart he is eminently
deserving of the high place which he holds in the community where so many years of his life have been passed.
