William R Troy of Washington township was born at Greenfield, Washington county, Penna, September 4, 1831, and was educated in the subscription schools of that day. Being left an orphan at the age of ten years, he began life for himself on the river as a hand on the coal boats used to transport coal before the days of barges and steam tow boats, and followed that business till quite recently. In 1883 he built a repair dock and has been since engaged in repairing boats. His dock is near Fayette City at the mouth of Little Redstone Creek.He was married in 1862 to Sarah Buxton, daughter of Samuel Buxton and Ruth Floyd Buxton, the former a native of England and the latter of Pennsylvania. The have reared five children: Albert W Troy; Harry A Troy; Gemva D Troy; Enola Troy and Walter Troy. They are all living at home.
Mr Troy is a member of the Masonic fraternity.
His father, David Troy, was a native of Virginia, came to Pennsylvania as a young man and settled in Washington county. He married Elizabeth Fenton, whose parents were early settlers of Fayette county. He and his wife died when their son William R Troy was quite young.
