Abijah McClain of Cumberland Twp., Greene County

First part taken directly from page 274 of "The Ten Mile Country and it's
pioneer Families":

ABIJAH McCLAIN

     It would seem that Abijah McClain lived in the vicinity of Elizabeth,
Pennsylvania, when he served as a Frontier Ranger in Captain Richard
Johnsons Company of Westmoreland County Militia. Prior to that time he
served in the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment of the continental Line, when
that Regiment took part in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and
Saratoga. He drew a pension for his service as shown by the list of
pensioners in the 1840 census.
     Abijah McClain was born 1754 and died at Rices Landing July 11, 1848.
He married Pamelia Doughty, one of the six daughters of Edward Doughty, who
warranted the tract of land between Thomas Blackridge and the Monongahela
River, under the name "Pigeon's Resort" She was born March 17, 1759 and died
January 5,1833. Both are buried in the cemetery on the hill above Rices
Landing, overlooking the Monongahela River.
     About 1792, Abijah McClain began buying out the heirs of Edward Doughty
in order to obtain a full title of "Pigeons Resort". The six daughters,
including Pamelia, wife of Abijah McClain;Mary, wife of Jame McCreary of
Brownsville; Martha wife of James Blackburn; Eleanor, wife of Samuel West;
Ruth and Rebecca Doughty sold the claims, while Enoch Enochs , John Wright
and Jesse Bumgarner, gave quit claim deeds for some of their interests they
had in the property. Abijah McClian then proceeded to lay out a number of
lots on this land, it later became part of Rices Landing.
   When Abijah died at the age of 94 years, a number of his children had
died before him. His will notes this circumstance. (Will book 3. pp36) It
was proven July 24, 1848.
