Lemuel A. ALLIS, a native of Medina Co., OH, was b. 5/27/1844. He came to Mich. in 1865 with his parents, Lucius and Eliza A. (SUTLIFFE) ALLIS, natives respectively of MA and CT. They estab. their farm on section 28 of Hillsdale Twp.
Lucius ALLIS was b. 8/29/1817 in MA and d. 5/5/1873 in Hillsdale Twp. He was a member of the Baptist Church, an abolitionist and a pioneer in the underground railroad system, helping many fugitives to freedom. His father was Lemuel A. ALLIS, Sr. who d. 1855 in Medina Co., OH. Eliza A. ALLIS was b. 7/25/1819. She and Lucius had two sons, Lemuel and William J. who lived in the town of Hillsdale.
On 12/30/1869, Lemuel marr. Mary E. Howe. Mary was b. 2/20/1853 in Canada, the dau. of Clancy and Elizabeth (MORSE) HOWE, and grandneice of Samuel F. B. Morse, inventor of the telegraph. Lemuel and Mary had three children: Ina B., Dilla M. and Lucius Garfield, the oldest 17 years and the youngest six years (in 1888). Lemuel was a school board member for 14 years and a Justice of the Peace for 10 years. He and his wife were members of the Free-Will Baptist Church at Bankers Station.
