HUGHES Family of Spring Twp. Centre Co. PA

The following data was compiled by Richard "Rich" HUGHES 2gr-grandson of:

1...HENRY HUGHES b. ca. 1785 ( 1840 census says that he was in his 60s ) - d. post-1840 ( last census entry : 1840 ) Charcoal Maker. The 1815 Spring Twp, Assessment shows a Patrick HUGHES. He may have been Henry's brother.

The first five children are from the Spring Twp. Assessment books (hereafter to be designated as "S.T.A. book" ) 1825 - 1836 for school children between the ages of 5 and 12. It is supposed that James (#6) is a member of this family since the list ended the year before James would have been due to enter school. However, it does seem like a good bet.

Spring Twp. Assessment of 1834 shows Henry owning cows and working as a Collier at Valentine and Thomas. Valentine & Thomas operated 2 forges, 1 rolling mill, a nail factory and a sawmill. A "Collier" is either a coal miner or a charcoal maker. Since there were no coal mines in the Axemann vicinity, he must have been a charcoal maker.

The 1840 census shows the HUGHES household had a son under 10 (this could be James who was b. in 1831), one under 15 (Henry, Jr.) and one under 20 (John). Henry Sr. was under 70 and his wife was under 60. Elizabeth was married in 1838 as I would expect was her elder sister Jane. I would expect Isabella to have been on this census though it was possible that she married at 17.

According to George HUGHES, his grandfather worked at Logan Furnace, about a mile south of Axemann, which closed in 1842. He worked on the mile-long tunnel for the extraction of the iron ore.

In the Spring Twp. Assessment for 1834 is listed a George HUGHS, Miner R.C., Cow.
