Jonas Spatch ROTH Obit.

The following item was taken from the Comstock News, printed Thursday, March 24, 1932.

Jonas S. ROTH, son of Thomas Bradley and Esther GRIEST-ROTH, was born at Circleville, Pickaway Co. OH., Sept. 23, 1850 and passed away this life at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 22 days, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Ormand PIERCE in Somerford, Custer Co. NE. Wednesday, March 16, 1932.

Brother ROTH was one of that dwindling rank of pioneers coming into the state of Nebraska from the eastern, southern and northern directions of the middle west. At the time of his coming, there was no thought of the town of Westcott, Comstock, Sargent and Broken Bow. Even Custer County was unthought of. We are reminded once again of that pioneer stage of life of America, of the sacrifice of leaving home and loved ones; the risk of fortune of staking out new claims; the difficulties and privations symbolized by log cabins and sod houses; the sparcity of homes and trading places (fancy having to go to Grand Island to buy matches); the short crops, short prices, lean years --- these and many others are brought home very forcibly by the passing of Mr. ROTH.

When but seven years of age, the deceased, with his parents, came to Paris, IL. Here he grew into manhood and on Dec. 1, 1874 he was united in marriage to Virginia EUBANK of that city. Mrs. ROTH passed away Nov. 9, 1920.

To this union were born four sons and four daughters, all of whom are living.

In the year of 1879, Mr. & Mrs. ROTH moved to NE., taking up their homestead claim five miles west of Comstock. Here they resided in their sod home until 1891 when it was decided to change residence and for five years, they lived in Missouri. In 1896 Missouri was bidden goodbye and a return to their homestead was made. In 1912, it was decided to retire from active life and Comstock became their home.

Mr. ROTH was a Christian believer and in 1893 he was converted and became a member of the Baptist Church at Coburg.

For a number of years, our dear one has suffered very much physical pain and during the last two years or three years and especially during these latter months, the suffering has been excruciating. This sickness was borne in a very patient and courageous spirit. This was doubtless helped by the loving ministry of his children, as he stayed with his son, Fred ROTH & daughter, Mrs. Henry Ormand PIERCE during the last two years. He also visited with his other children for a few days at a time.

Mr. ROTH was very well known for his sterling Character, personal integrity and Christian devotion.

He leaves to mourn his loss, eight children: Clifford Ivan ROTH of Sargent, Richard Edgar and William Bradley ROTH of Comstock, Mrs. Dora Alice ROTH-PIERCE and husband Henry Ormand PIERCE, Mrs. Mary Esther ROTH-MATTOX and husband Charles B. MATTOX, of Sargent, Mrs. Nellie ROTH-ANDERSON and husband Ethan Earl ANDERSON of Sweetwater, Mrs. Halycon ROTH-BENNET and husband Lloyd BENNET of Scottsbluff and Fred ROTH of Comstock, thirty-three grandchildren, one of whom, Lucille, was born on the same day in the year as her grandfather, eight great-granchildren and many friends and acquaintances.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon from the Comstock Community Church, conducted by the Rev, W.S. MORRIS, pastor of the church and internment was made in the Douglas Grove Cemetry in Comstock.
