RITZMAN GRADE SCHOOL YEARS: 1954-1960

  • KINDERGARDEN: 1954 (Age:6): Mrs EVANS: I was 5 years young. I remember really liking Mrs. EVANS...she was a very nice teacher.

Kindergarden: I was 5 years young. Everyone wanted to play the triangle during "Music Time". Sleeping on the floor during "Rest Time" on towels we brought from home. "Snack Time"...mmm and RECESS: MY FAVORITE TIME ! {:-) : All through grade school: SWINGS : Two sets , one not very tall and one very tall. LOVED the tall swings...I'd swing as high as I could...most of the time, higher than anyone else, because they were afraid to be that high. I WANTED TO FLY ! {:-) We'd climb up the inverted V's of the supports to the top of the support...we'd surely break some bones if we let go at that height...but no-one ever did: MONKEY BARS : I'd always hold on by the sides, swing WAY back and I could make it to the other side in three "jumps" !: BASKET BALL COURT : which was mostly a "Four Square" court. LOVED that game...one person to a quarter of a square...use a basketball and hit/bounce it (one time only) into one of the other quarters trying to get your opponent to knock it out of bounds; BASEBALL DIAMOND : on the far side of the play yard. A stone wall ran from Rt. 91 to the end of the school yard. The wall began, parallel to the school, about midway from the corner of the school and gradually rose in height to about ten levels that wrapped around the corner of the school yard and served as "bleachers" for the baseball diamond; Mostly I LOVED to RUN, pretending to be a horse...I was ALWAYS a STALLION (of Course ! ). Growing up on TV Westerns had something to do with that ! And since my father was born in Comstock, Custer Co. NE. and we had made a few trips Out West...horses meant a lot to me. There were two friends (girls), Linda DAVID and Karen BOEHM who ALSO wanted to be Stallions, which I'd argue, couldn't BE, because stallions were MALE horses ! But they girls were adamant, so we'd split up the "herd" (all our other "horse-friends") and run in three separate groups, occasionally merging into one LARGE herd of "horses"...and all run around the school yard, our "manes" flying in the breeze ! {:-)

  • FIRST GRADE: 1955: (Age:7) Mrs. ROSS...another favorite teacher. She was loved by all the students. She was one of the nicest teachers I had.

  • SECOND GRADE: 1956 (Age 8) Mrs. RULEY: (Age:8) l-r: Larry BRIGHT, Phyllis ELLENWOOD, Louis MENKLE, Connie BRAND & Paul :Second Grade: Mrs. RULEY was a large woman...mostly jovial. But one morning, someone told a joke and the punch line came just before the class bell rang. It rang and I was still laughing at the joke. Mrs. RULEY had an 18 inch ruler in her hand and she slapped my knuckles for making noise after the bell rang ! I was stunned and trying not to laugh at the same time. That ruler HURT !...??? Being reprimanded for laughing??? I didnt like her after that incident !

  • THIRD GRADE: 1957: (Age:9) Mrs. JONES: Was another fine and kind teacher. She rarely raised her voice to us. Sometime around then I acquired the nickname of "Paul Parrot"...of the shoes of the same name fame...drove me crazy ! It was NOT because I repeated things I heard...kids just loved to get me riled! I got to play Santa Claus in the class Christmas pageant that year..."Now Dasher, Now Dancer, Now Prancer and Vixen...On Comet, On Cupid, On Donner and Blitzen! From the top of the roof to the top of the wall, Now dash away, dash away, dash away ALL !" I was SO NERVOUS, but I got all the words out without a calamity !
  • FOURTH GRADE:1958: (Age:10): Mrs. MEDVIN: I painted a picture of a crocodile (alligator?) and the Art teacher thought it was VERY good...{:-) It ended up hanging in the Principal's Office...don't remember what happpened to it after that...??? I also began taking piano lessons that year. Mrs. McCLELLAND was my teacher. That year I had fallen in love...her name was Cindy and she lived with her parents behind Eastgate Shopping Center. I would walk over to her house almost every day after school and we'd play "Shoots & Ladders", "Go To The Head Of The Class" and "Candyland" board games. We were inseperable. We had so much fun together. One day, on the school yard, I kissed her on her cheek. From that moment on, several of the kids would shout, "Paul & Cindy, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G..." That embarrased me and I'd get angry and chase them...secretly proud that everyone knew how I felt about her ! Then one fateful day, I went over to see her and she was getting into the family car, which was packed full of household items and clothes...they were moving and didn't inform either of us beforehand ! I asked her, "where are you going?!!!" and she said, through her tears, "We're moving !???" From that moment on things got blurry...my own tears !... "Where was she going?!" and "Would we ever see each other again???!" As she looked out of the car window, I could see the tears in her eyes also...we were stunned...as the car pulled out of the driveway, she waved forlornly and our world was shattered and it collapsed ! My heart went with her...my world went BLACK. "Why was this happening to us???"...

  • FIFTH GRADE: 1959: (Age:11): Mrs. REICHENBAUGH: I became a Red Cross Monitor...attended the weekly meetings and brought the topics back to my class afterwards. Our class was split down the middle: Mrs. REICHENBAUGH taught Fifth AND Sixth grades. We did homework while she taught Sixth Grade and vice versa...learned a LOT that year.
  • SIXTH GRADE: 1960: (Age:12): Mrs. REICHENBAUGH: Again a split class. I was one of three artists (Linda DAVID, Karen BOEHM and myself) who drew/painted all the class murals. The Art Teacher: Mrs. X: Long white hair, dark red-orange lipstick, tailored dark suits and black hairpins in her white hair...a real Harpy. Smoked and reeked of that foul smoke. We knew more about color than she did !...We drew a mural about the South American Gauchos(Sixth Grade) and North American Cowboys(Fifth Grade)...lots of horses. The teacher had us repaint the horses so many times that they all ended up a muddy black/brown color...we were MAD !

I was spending so much time painting murals with Linda and Karen. One day at the Ellet Cinema, Linda and I held hands by sticking our hands behind the seat opening while we watched a movie. She had an older brother, Paul DAVID, who was very beefy and nobody messed with him ! I was the proverbial skinny, 90 lb. weakling to his muscle boundness...I was fearful of him. There was a story about his getting angry one day while at the Ellet Cinema and he shoved his fist through the back of a seat...the hole was his testimony...He Scared ME !...Linda and I stopped seeing each other socially...as I recall, her brother, Paul, didn't want any guy hanging around his little sister, so I faded out of the picture.

I began taking violin lessons that year. HATED IT ! That continuous high pitch sound close to my ears DROVE ME CRAZY ! Mrs. June MARTZ was our Music Teacher. She had taught both my older brothers (Dan & Bill), so my name was Dan/Bill/Paul for five of the six years !...When I finally proved to the Violin Teacher that I DIDN"T LIKE THE VIOLIN...I'd always "forget" to bring it to school. He eventually got angry with me and got very upset with my lack of effort...I was crying and RELIEVED at the same time. That ended my violin lessons. Two weeks later, Mrs. MARTZ said..."You have such long fingers...why not try the Cello?"...So I started Cello lessons. I had no excuse for forgetting that cello ! It was SO large...I could hardly carry it ! Forget riding my bike to school on cello lesson day...that instrument and I spent the next 6 years together. I began to play Cello in the Akron School System's Annual "May Festival Orchestra". I'm on at least three records, as they recorded the Festivals. I was 12th chair in Sixth Grade and 6th chair the next year. After that, I switched to singing in the Choir until. I was still taking piano lessons from Mrs. CLELLAND a very gentle black woman, who played piano very well. I remember her curved fingers (that was a MUST for playing piano well) and have always stressed that to my piano students. I learned a LOT from her.

We had a large field and baseball diamond in one corner of the field. My sixth year, I was playing baseball with the other kids during gym class. When it was my turn to bat, I let a friend, Dana BRYANT, "pitch-hit" for me and I was going to run the bases. Even though Dana was taller than I was, I could run faster than the all other kids in my class. Dana was left handed and I neglected to take that into consideration...he was swinging the bat from left to right and I began running from behind him on his right side. He began his swing which caused his bat to meet my forehead. I blacked out. I eventually came to as I was being loaded into an ambulance. They took xrays at the hospital. I must have been ok because they let me go home that day. A large lump covered half of my forehead and the area around my left eye turned a stunning shade of black & blue. I knew then that I never wanted to repeat that "performance" again !

HYRE JR. HIGH SCHOOL YEARS: 1961-1963

Hyre Jr. High School was built on "hallowed ground"...ie. my wilderness stomping grounds...really disliked its being built in that particular area. Cheered when I heard that some rowdy juvenile delinquents had pushed over the first brick wall that was raised...

However, attending school proved to be a novel experience. First year at Hyre Jr. High School. What a change ! Not stuck in one class room ALL day...having to rush to get to the next classroom when the bells rang. Not ONE teacher, but MANY !??? Took some getting used to, but I did.

    SEVENTH GRADE: 1961 (Age:13):

  • English & Spanish I: Mrs. GOODMAN: Mrs. GOODMAN, Bless her soul, had trouble remembering which class she was teaching...she'd walk in to English class and begin speaking in Spanish and vice versa. She was a nice teacher. Reminded me of my maternal grandmother in appearance.

  • Gym: Mr. TOTH: Mr. TOTH was from Czechoslovakia and was said to have been on an Olympic team. He was shy and short but VERY muscular. He pronounced his name : TODHT (long "o"), so automatically, My name was "RODHT".
  • General Math: Mr. O. ? : Mr. ? () was a little taller than my maternal grandfather...good looking. A nice teacher.
  • ? : History,
  • Art: Miss GOSEN: Wore her black hair a la "Cleopatra" and was, how you say?, "stacked". She was my FAVORITE teacher ! She liked my sense of color and I was one of her favored students. She was very bohemian and the single male teachers found reasons to walk into class to talk to her.

  • Miss Gosen held a contest to see who would be the artists who would decorate the school's front windows for Christmas. We all did preliminary color designs of the Three Wise Men. Once again, Linda DAVID, Karen BOEHM and I were asked to do the honors. She liked Linda's and Karen's designs and my color scheme and knew that we had worked well together before. We were elated ! However, two weeks before we were to begin, Miss GOSEN became ill and a substitute teacher replaced her. This teacher "upset the applecart"...she chose other artists to do the work and we were literally "out in the cold"...My mistrust of certain adults began forming. My eventual switch to music as an artistic outlet also began at that moment.

  • Orchestra (Cello):Mr. ELEY: Mr. ELEY was tall and skinny...a la today's late "Mr. Rodgers". I began playing cello in the school orchestra. I originally wanted to play the piano, but a girl student already held that position. I have no idea how the decision was made. There was no audition. Some of my musical friends were:
  • Irene RAMNYTZ, violinist, we got along well all during our jr. high school years.
  • V. J. AGARWHAL, violist.
  • Ahmed TAHIR, violinist and clasically trained pianist...very good but his ego was very apparent...went to a party at his house and he had a baby grand piano in his living room and I was envious. We still got along.
  • Larry BLALOCK, cellist. He was the only other cellist in the orchestra, so we spent a lot of time together in rehearsals.
  • Science: ?

    EIGHTH GRADE: 1962 (Age:14)

NINTH GRADE: 1963: (Age:15): I was an "upper classman"...the Senior version of jr. high school..

  • English : Miss HEADLOUGH, I was having trouble in my life...Mom & Dad having problems...I was disoriented and couldn't keep my grades up. I was failing English and didn't know what was wrong...Then one day Miss HEADLOUGH told us to cut a picture out of a magazine and write a story about it. I cut out a photo of a Mountain Lion protecting her cub from a Grizzly Bear. To my surprise, I enjoyed writing about it. That was a turning point for me...up to that time I was very shy and hated giving oral book reports and writing. My grades began returning to their normal level...before that, I was always on the school "Merit Roll" with a 3.0 rating. I got an "A" on the story and big smiles from Miss HEADLOUGH. She told us of her love of Australia...I can't remember if she said that's where she was born or not...?...so we students got her a record of Australian songs for a present when we graduated to high school. She was so touched, she cried as she thanked us. We felt so good. Normally, she was so down to earth and didn't smile much. I think we thawed her out ! {:-)

  • Algebra II : Miss HUDAK, was keeping my head above water gradewise. She was a fun teacher and I learned a lot from her.

  • Biology : Mr. RUPP,
  • Gym : Mr. TOTH,
  • Choir : Mrs. ?
  • Metal Shop : Mr. ?
  • Choir : ? ?
  • Health : Mr. "Big Head" (Football Coach who was so full of himself). Didn't care much for him.
  • Orchestra : Mr. ELEY: More fun in orchestra: This year I went back up to Ellet to play for their senior musical : "OKLAHOMA" "starring" Bob MANZARI...local musical hearthrob...all the girls were in love with him...very talented guy. Saw my first production at Goodyear Musical Theatre. Brother Dan and his, then, wife Joanne were in the chorus of "KISMET". A friend of theirs: Richard RESSEGER had the lead. He was MAGICAL onstage AND off ! A large tenor voice...that show transported me to another realm...of course, being a musician, I loved Alexander BORODIN's music from "The Arabian Nights"...but the entire cast was excellent ! Suddenly, I found a life beyond school ! Something to look forward to...a reason to live [ after sobering personal family problems.
