GRIEST BIOGRAPHY:Thanks to Justin William GRIEST
"The surame is Welsh and at one time spelled with an "e" on the end: GRIESTE. William PENN converted John GRIESTE to the Quaker faith and when the friends were persecuted in the British Isles, John and his family of ten sons migrated to Holland. After going to Holland, some of the sons married there and brought their Dutch wives over to Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.
John GRIESTE was settled on the Delware prior to Penn's first visit to the colony (1682) He died in 1688. In 1694, his son George GRIEST was appointed to appraise land and in 1700 was one of the 113 inhabitants in and around Chichester who signed a petition to the Governor and council to have two fairs in the town of Chichester, Chichester Twp., Delaware Co. on the Penn-Del. line. His son Johnathan GRIEST, born in 1694, was the first squatter on land west of the Susquehanna. He was forcibly removed and confined at Philadelphia for the offense of entering unpurchased Indian Lands.
In 1738, among the first settlers coming to this new land west of the Susquehanna River was John GRIEST, an English Quaker. GRIEST built, for his family, a two-story limestone blockhouse, 16 feet square. The GRIEST home, erected only five years after Penn's heirs permitted land grants to be issued in York Co. PA., was the first inn west of the river, known as "Ye Old V! alley Inn". In 1755, the title to the property passed to another owner and it was demolished in 1962 to make way for a shopping center. It was located on the north side of Lincoln Highway, Route 30, two miles east of York, PA.
