Next door was living: Thomas SMITH, Sr., age 74, born PA. and his wife Jane SMITH, age 73 b. MD. aso their dau. Eliza, age 32.
There was a terrible Cholera epidemic in Henry Co. IA. in the spring of 1851. John Sample died June 5, 1851 and everyone present at his funeral fell victim to the infection. There are tombstones in Henry Co. for:

From info told to my mother, Ruth by Uncle Roy DURHAM: "Thomas was shot by a rebel, Lum ROLLINS. His son, Henry, was in the wagon and was saved because as Thomas was shot and fell into the wagon, Henry leaned over to help his father just as the second shot was fired. ROLLINS had a two shot muzzle loading gun and while he was reloading, Henry was able to get away."

Three of Thomas SMITH's daughters and his stepson lived quite near one another in a small community called Westcott, south & west of what is now Comstock, NE. In 1898, the town of Comstock was established and at least one of the store buildings was moved from Westcott to Comstock. Also, in that community was Ezra BARTHOLEMEW, who married Sarah DURHAM after the death of Alexander. Charles BARTHOLEMEW married Louisa's dau. Mary.
