Griswold Phelps Progress Report

William PHELPS was born about 1593.50 He emigrated in 1630 from Crewkerne, Somersetshire, England.365 They made the voyage on the Mary & John.

He lived in Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA before 1635.365 William lived in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT after 1635.365 He died on 14 July 1672 at the age of 79 in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.50,366

Invt. œ472-19-06. Taken the last day of February, 1681, by John Wolcott, Thomas Stoughton, John Bissell. Will nuncupative.
10 February, 1681: His Will was that his brother Timothy should have all his Estate to dispose of & to be sole Executor; that his brother Timothy should have his choice for his third out of all his Outlands.

Court Record, Page 51--2 March, 1681-2: This Court having considered the Claims presented by the Widow Phelps & her Attorney, find that by Virtue of a Jointure agreement the whole personal Estate, together with his houseing and two thirds of all his outlands, are the proper Estate of the Widow, and advise that the Out Lands be indifferently divided, two-thirds to the Widow according to Joynture, and one third to Timothy Phelps, the debts to be paid by each in proportion."

William L. Phelps and Margaret are listed as brother-in-law and sister-in-law in the George Letcher household, Dwell. 211, Fam. 211. William is listed as 78 years old and born in PA; parents born in CT and NJ. Margaret is listed as 75 years old and the mother of four children, of which two were living at the time of the census. William and Margaret had been married for 57 years.

He died on 10 July 1906 at the age of 84.369,370

Central City Republican:
"Wm. L. Phelps died at the county farm Wednesday, at the age of 86 years. His last illness was due to paralysis. The funeral was held Thursday."

Rachel ROBINSON was born about 1697.371 She died on 19 September 1758 at the age of 61 in Nottingham, Hillsborough Co., NH.372 She was buried at Blodgett Cemetery in Nottingham, Hillsborough Co., NH.373

Spouse: Deacon Samuel GREELEY. Rachel ROBINSON and Deacon Samuel GREELEY were married before 1721 in Haverhill, Essex Co., MA.141 Children were: Mehitable GREELEY.


Margaret ROBISON was born (date unknown).

Spouse: Alva PHELPS. Margaret ROBISON and Alva PHELPS were married.290 Children were: Juliaet Ann PHELPS.


Alvin SCHRANTZ374 was born on 11 September 1888.375 He died in March 1973 at the age of 84.375 He lived at time of last residence in Springview, Keya Paha Co., NE.375 Parents: James I. SCHRANTZ and Ida HAMBLET.

Spouse: Anna PAINTER. Anna PAINTER and Alvin SCHRANTZ were married.284


James I. SCHRANTZ376 was born on 4 March 1857 in Northampton Co., PA.181 In 1884 he was an a farmer and rancher in Springview, Keya Paha Co., NE.181 In this year, northwest of Springview, he proved up on a homestead. In a 1923 edition of the Springview Herald, it was reported that "J.I. Schrantz shipped two loads of stock to the South Omaha market the first of the week....Mr. Schrantz is one of the most successful hog raisers in this county and knows the game from start to finish."

He died on 29 April 1948 at the age of 91.181 James was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Springview, Keya Paha Co., NE.181

Spouse: Ida HAMBLET. Ida HAMBLET and James I. SCHRANTZ were married on 16 June 1888 in Springview, Keya Paha Co., NE.181 Children were: Alvin SCHRANTZ.


Phoebe A. SMITH was born (date unknown).

Capt. Nathaniel SQUIER served in the military during the Revolutionary War.377 He died in his 62nd year on 28 October 1789.378

Spouse: Mary BEACH. Mary BEACH and Capt. Nathaniel SQUIER were married on 24 April 1751 at the Hanover Church in Whippany, Morris Co., NJ.22 Children were: Stephen SQUIER.


Rhoda SQUIER was born on 4 November 1791.320 Parents: Stephen SQUIER and Margaret MAGIE.

Stephen SQUIER225 was born on 13 February 1765 in Hanover, Morris Co., NJ.379 He served with the Revolutionary War troops in New Jersey.380 He appeared in the census in 1840 at what was then Nicholson, Luzerne County, now in Nicholson, Wyoming Co., PA.381 His household consisted of a male 70-79 and a female 60-69. There were other Squires on the same page. Neither Silas Winter nor Foster Horton were listed in Nicholson.

Stephen died on 23 April 1853 at the age of 88 in Nicholson, Wyoming Co., PA.382 He was buried in West Nicholson, Wyoming Co., PA.382

Mary TILLOTSON was born in 1725.352 She died on 31 October 1794 at the age of 69 in Austerlitz, Columbia Co., NY.352

Phebe C. UNDERWOOD was born on 22 May 1801.384 She died on 29 March 1876 at the age of 74.182 Parents: Silas UNDERWOOD and Amillison PHELPS.

Spouse: Daniel Davis HAMBLET. Phebe C. UNDERWOOD and Daniel Davis HAMBLET were married.184


Silas UNDERWOOD was born about 1762.385 He appeared in the census in 1840 in Tompkins, Delaware Co., NY.386 In this census of military pensioners, Silas was listed as 78 years old and in the household of Samuel R. Underwood. He died in 1844 at the age of 82.387

Celesta WHALEY was born about 1844.388 Parents: John C. WHALEY and Rhoda PHELPS.


Earl WHALEY was born about 1855.388 Parents: John C. WHALEY and Rhoda PHELPS.


Jeremiah WHALEY was born about 1848.388 Parents: John C. WHALEY and Rhoda PHELPS.


John C. WHALEY was born on 2 January 1821 in New York.389 He lived in Algansee, Branch Co., MI about 1877.390

This excerpt from an 1879 issue of the Coldwater Republican no doubt refers to our John Whaley:
"J. C. Whaley has lived in Algansee only two years, during which time he was (sic) erected a fine new brick house. For nearly 40 years he has lived in Williams county, Ohio, about sixteen miles from his present house. That county was very new at the time of his advent there, and he has had a full initiation into the hardships of pioneer life. His father once had an encounter with wolves, single handed and in the dark, with no weapon except a club. Mr. Whaley himself was treed twice in one night by wolves in Williams county. He was born and raised in Genesee county, N. Y., and is 58 years of age."

John died on 11 June 1909 at the age of 88 in Algansee, Branch Co., MI.392 He was buried at Fisher Hill Cemetery in Algansee, Branch Co., MI.393

Spouse: Rhoda PHELPS. Rhoda PHELPS and John C. WHALEY were married on 4 July 1841 in Steuben Co., IN.360 Children were: Celesta WHALEY, Jeremiah WHALEY, Stella WHALEY, Earl WHALEY.


Stella WHALEY was born about 1851.388 Parents: John C. WHALEY and Rhoda PHELPS.


Margaret WILLIAMS was born about 1712.273 She died on 10 July 1783 at the age of 71.274 She was buried at First Presbyterian Churchyard in Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ.394

Spouse: Joseph MAGIE. Margaret WILLIAMS and Joseph MAGIE were married in Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ.270 Children were: Joseph MAGIE.


Silas WINTERS enlisted as an ensign in the county militia on 4 August 1805 in Delaware Co., NY.395

Gardner YOUNG appeared in the census in 1880 in Day Twp., Montcalm Co., MI.396 In this census, Gardner's family appears next to Ralzemon Carothers. Gardner, 42; Miranda, 25, and sons Wilbur, 15; Theodore, 13; and Bur[d], 4. If these details are correct, Miranda would have been Gardner's second wife.

Spouse: Miranda CAROTHERS. Miranda CAROTHERS and Gardner YOUNG were married.43


John W. ZIRKEL was born in 1858.186

Spouse: Ella HAMBLET. Ella HAMBLET and John W. ZIRKEL were married on 6 September 1883 in Lancaster Co., Nebraska.186
