(NOTE: Concerning this list of citations, the many instances of double periods are due to my composing sentences with normal punctuation and the software's automatic placing of periods at the end of certain fields of text. In my cranky old age, I'm not compensating for the software's placement of periods at the end of sentences with disregard for quotation marks and parentheses.).

Eberhart observes that the small booklet gives Charles' middle initial, and that family records have just "Charles." His middle name, "Henry," is based on a descendant's statement that he knew his great-grandfather's name was Charles Henry Farlee because his own father, Charles Henry Farley, born June 16, 1880, had been named after his grandfather.

Significantly, the marriage took place in my (DP's) hometown. However, the several generations of my family that lived in St. Paul retained no memory of relationship to the Farlees. There was, at least, an association of Griswold Phelps, then his children, and Harriet Kittle Butler, then her descendants that persisted through time and through changes in location.

Graves, e-mail: "Hi Dori, There is absolutely no question in my mind that you are descended from immigrant John Graves of Concord, MA ..." Family memory supplied the name "Annie Van Curen," as Alford Hamblet's mother. However, after researching this question, no doubt remains in my mind either, that Anna Graves was Samuel's first wife and Alford's mother. Speculating on the probability that, within my family, the Phelps and Hamblet data got scrambled, I think it might have been due to my maternal grandmother's querying relatives for family history sometime between 1940 and 1970, and that elderly relatives were then trying to remember details they had not thought about for decades.

Place of burial is questionable. The Harold V. Hamblet form indicates that she was buried in Harlan, Shelby Co., IA, and indicates that Samuel Hamblet was in Tompkins, NY, for the 1855 census, which would suggest, if Anna were buried in Iowa, that he had been in Iowa (of which we have no record) and had returned from there to New York.

Assuming that the Whitman and the Lower Whitman cemeteries are in proximity, the reference to Samuel's burial on the McRea farm might be explained by McRea burials in the Lower Whitman Cemetery, including the grave of Margaret, wife of Samuel McRea. Perhaps these small cemeteries were on or near Samuel McRea's farm.

Earlier in the day this message was sent, Frank and Polly checked the Harlan town cemetery and two rural cemeteries, Pleasant Grove and Bowman's Grove, without locating any Hamblet graves. There were, however, a number of older illegible stones. A likely family connection to the Bowman's Grove Cemetery suggests that Sam and/or Amanda could have been interred there with the graves no longer marked or no longer legibly marked. Allyn Ingalsbe, 1870-April 15, 1871, and Laura A. 252. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1880 Federal Census transcription online, FHL Film 1254752, NA Film No. T9-0752, p. 329D. The 1880 Federal census recorded Emily's birthplace as New York, which seems likely. Both Harold Hamblet's records and the 1860 census give Emily's birthplace as Michigan, perhaps because Harold Hamblet might have used that 1860 census as his source. (It appears that persons providing information to a census taker would, not uncommonly, give a former place of residence rather than place of birth for themselves or a family member.).

  254. U.S. Federal Census (Online: MyFamily.com, Inc.), Williams Co., OH, Dwell. 740, Fam. 742, accessed October 2001. I believe that Emily Kittle was listed twice in the 1850 census. Larry Clark, genealogist in charge of the Porter Co., IN, library's genealogy department, told me on November 5, 2002, that this was not uncommon, and he found it in the 1850 census for one of his own ancestors, listed in two townships.
1850 census, Richland Twp., Steuben Co., IN, recorded on September 11, 1850: Image 5, continued in 6, of 12: Fam and Dwell. 776. E[m...iol]y M. Kittel, 15, b. NY, in the Clinton Butler household. (In this census, Emily's name is unclear, for the census taker mangled the middle of it so it appears to have an extra syllable, and at first the ending appears to be "is." However, a careful inspection of the census taker's handwriting, especially of a word ending in "y" higher on the same page, establishes the last letter as a "y.")
1850 census, North West Twp., Williams Co., OH, recorded September 25, 1850: Emily Kettle, age 16, born in NY, in the household of John Whaley, age 29; Rhoda, age 24; [Selistia], age 7; Jeremiah, age 2.

  258. Family memory and family papers. In various census records and other records, memory supplied the birthplaces of parents and even of individuals currently in a household. Among at least some members of this line of ancestors, careful track was not kept of details such as places of birth, nor was the importance of providing them for records recognized. As an exception to this negligence, the children of Griswold and Rhoda (Squier) Phelps generally gave their parents' birthplaces accurately as Connecticut for him and New Jersey for her. In censuses, family memory supplied either Pennsylvania or New York for Mr. Kittle.
  259. U.S. Federal Census (Online: MyFamily.com, Inc.). Steuben Co., IN, Dwell. 776, Fam. 776, accessed autumn 2002. I make the assumption that Mr. Kittle disappeared due to death rather than divorce and have based the period of his assumed death on the age of the youngest Kittel (sic) child in the household of Clinton Butler, 1850 census.
  260. U.S. Federal Census (Online: MyFamily.com, Inc.), Steuben Co., IN, Dwell. 776, Fam. 776, accessed autumn 2002. Mr. Kittle's marriage to Harriet is based on the 1850 census and the marriage record of Clinton Butler and Harriet Kittle. The marriage record shows her surname as "Kittle," and the Kittel (sic) children in the Butler household indicate that this surname was that of a former husband.

"The following descriptions are of the so-called 'Clinker Lots' set out by surveyor John Harriman, Jr. and his associates in 1699-1700. These 174 lots include much of the land that is now Westfield, as well as surrounding areas. While the politics of this division are a study in itself, suffice it to say that as the population of Elizabethtown grew, there was a need for more land for the progeny of the first settlers. This survey was one answer to that need.".

However, with her uncommon name and her family's association with Delaware County, Amillison Phelps is the likely candidate for Silas' wife. The Delaware County USGenWeb site has posted a town history (History of Cannonsville by Mrs. Hester Lane Miles), which has a piece about Silas Underwood, who was a Revolutionary War veteran. The history lists some or all of his children including Phebe Underwood, who married Daniel "Hamlet." Harold V. Hamblet's information indicates that the Daniel Hamblet she married was Alford's uncle, Daniel Davis Hamblet, which would make Alford's Aunt Phebe a first cousin to Harriet (Phelps?) (Kittle) Butler, if Amillison Underwood and Harriet both belong to this Phelps family.
  300. Ryan Wadleigh, "Phelps Genealogy," e-mail message from <...> (near Seattle, WA) to Dorinda Partsch, 8/30/2005 3:27:11 PM CST. In the genealogical searches I have been doing, I have found it common for children of related families, or related-by-marriage families, to marry. Several marriages connect the families of Silas Underwood and Silas Winters, whose wife was Phebe Phelps (sister of Griswold). Wadleigh reports, from his family research, that Silas and Phebe Winters' son or nephew William married Maria Underwood, daughter of Silas and Amillison Underwood, and that Silas Winters' first wife, Jane Cannon, had a niece, Roxanna Cannon, who married William Underwood, son of Silas and Amillison Underwood.
  301. Emilie Phelps Holt, Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE death certificate, Local No. 120; State No. 4971. Details recorded on this record include her birth date, age at death, and that she was widowed. Also, birth place (New York); name of father (Curtis Phelps); father's birth place (Connecticut); mother's maiden name (Farlee); mother's birth place (Connecticut); and undertaker, date of burial, and place of burial. The informant for these facts is identified as Mrs. Flora Stowell. Some of this information, in my [DP's] opinion, is erroneous: Emily's father's name, her mother's maiden name, and her mother's place of birth. Descendants searching for Emily's parents have long looked for a Curtis Phelps because of the name on the death certificate. Although this possibility remains, much information points to her place in the family of Griswold Phelps. For one example, her obituary states that she came to Indiana at age 10 with her parents, which correlates with Griswold's arrival in Steuben County.

This document relates at least in part to a specific item of Charles Farley's estate. A handwritten page bearing signatures of Emily Farley, Flora Farley, and Julius H. Farley, reads in part, "...[regarding the children]...and that they are the owners of a claim against William Moore in the Sum of Twenty five Dollars...".

The children of Emily and Charles Farlee were apparently nine in number, and two more were born to Emily and Josiah McKinley. This source lists the last two as Myrtie M. 308. Emily Phelps Holt obituary, Seward Independent, prob. Seward, Seward Co., Nebraska, July 2, 1908. Handwriting on the copy of this obituary that I received indicates that the obit was obtained from the Nebraska State Historical Society; it has the year, mistakenly, as 1903. (Death certificate, with “1908,” must surely have the correct year.) The obituary states that one of Emily's sons, William B. Farlee, resided in Wolbach, Nebraska. This location put Farlee descendants in the same rural Nebraska area as the Letchers, the Carothers, Griswold's son William L. Phelps, and my [DP's] Kiechels. A discrepancy: the 1870 census lists Emily's husband as Josiah McKinley, not William B. Received from Catherine Eberhart, March 2009.
  309. P. Radwanski, "Re: Griswold Phelps who mar. Rhoda Squier," e-mail message from <...> (Tuckhannock, PA) to Dorinda Partsch, 3/23/02 2:11:15 AM PST. Using this list of Griswold and Rhoda's children, I [DP] assumed that the above names are all valid, and I assumed that later records (censuses in particular) referring to individuals that seemed to fit this family did, indeed, refer to Griswold's children. In a follow-up message, "Re: More on the Griswold Phelps family," sent 3/25/02 2:06:35 AM PST, Radwanski provided this information, "As for the tax lists with poor children - these usually only listed children between the ages of 5 - 10 that were schooled by the county - so older children would not be included.".

Form 36, for Daniel Davis Hamblet, compiled 12 DEC 1964; sources: Mrs. Bernice Freeman, Deposit, NY; 1850-55-60 censuses, Town of Tompkins, Delaware Co., NY; VT State House Records. The form for Daniel Davis Hamblet gives Jonas Underwood as Phebe's father and what looks like "Analison" for her mother. Just above the name "Jonas," in a space for any other husbands of Phebe, is "(Silas)." At first I thought Phebe must be the daughter of Jonas and the granddaughter of Silas, but now believe I was misreading the ambiguous text in "History of Cannonsville" by Mrs. Hester Lane Miles, which includes Phebe, who married Daniel "Hamlet" (Posted online at the Delaware County, NY Genealogy and History Site; accessed Jan. 3, 2005). Reading elsewhere at this site, in the "Biographical Review, 13th Section, pages 589 through 649," it becomes obvious that Phebe would be the daughter of Silas Underwood.
