I have included Pierre d'Amboise here in order to document why he is NOT the father of Mathias Ambrose (1696-1784).
Some years ago, an application for DAR membership indicated Pierre d'Amboise of Loraine, France, as the father of Mathias. We have no idea on what the claim was based because by 1996, the DAR no longer had the records to support the claim. Nevertheless, the relationship has continued to be asserted and has gained credence through repetition. A search of online records available as of 2014, shows the impossibility of the relationship.
Earlier researchers indicated Mathias' birth year variously as 1690, 1693, 1694, or 1695. However, the records have now been found that show Mathias was christened 7 Feb 1696 in the Lutheran Church at Brackenheim, Wurttemberg, Germany, the child of Mattheaus and Barbara Ambrosi. As was the practice at the time, his christening (baptismal) date was the one that began his life in the church so is given as his birth date on his tombstone at Apple's Church in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland.
Since infant mortality was common, a child was usually baptized within a few days after birth to insure they did not die unbaptized. Even if winter weather delayed Mathias' christening for a few weeks instead of days after his birth, it is unlikely he was born earlier than December of 1695.
Pierre D'Amboise died 3 Jul 1694, 19 months before Mathias' christening. Pierre and his wife, Jeanne Mercier, had three documented children. The last was a daughter, Marie, born posthumously on 5 Dec 1694. Pierre could not have fathered another child born after December 1694.
