It is an 1 NOTE interview given when he was 93 years old. Mr Key was born March 15, 1 NOTE 1836 in Shelby county, Tennessee and died on Feburary 3, 1936 in Carroll 1 NOTE County, Missouri. Mr. Key is buried at the Coloma Cemetery. 1 NOTE Wm. H. Key, Age 93, is one of the oldest residents in Carroll County; 1 NOTE Born 1 NOTE in Tennessee. 1 NOTE Wm. H. Key, one of the oldest Carroll county residents, was a visitor in 1 NOTE the 1 NOTE city Wednesday. He is at present making his home at Bogard. 1 NOTE With a mind that works like a person many years his junior and with a 1 NOTE readiness in recalling dates, Mr. Key spoke with precision and interest 1 NOTE as he 1 NOTE reviewed his life's history for a representative of this paper. In fact 1 NOTE his 1 NOTE appearance was of a man at least ten years younger and he is yet 1 NOTE reasonably 1 NOTE active regardless of the 93 years he has had the pleasure of living a 1 NOTE useful 1 NOTE life. 1 NOTE Born in Shelby county, Tenn., March 15, 1836, he spent eight years of 1 NOTE his 1 NOTE life there. At that age he accompanied his father and mother to Carroll 1 NOTE county, Missouri, and has since resided here. The family located on a 1 NOTE farm 1 NOTE near Mandeville. The trip was made up the Mississippi River and down the 1 NOTE Missouri in a steamboat; the family landing at DeWitt. After spending a 1 NOTE week at that place they started overland through the beautiful wooded 1 NOTE valleys and rolling prairies of the county in a wagon drawn by a team of 1 NOTE oxen. They had no roads in those days, Mr. Key explained, and our trip 1 NOTE to 1 NOTE Mandeville was made over the ridges. He recalled that the neighbors of 1 NOTE the 1 NOTE family were at that time were: Chas. Isom, William Brown, Elihu 1 NOTE Standley. 1 NOTE "These were all good people." he remarked. "and they aided us in making 1 NOTE our start in the wooded sections of the hills in Mandeville." 1 NOTE Mr. Key remembers a way back when: 1 NOTE Andrew Jackson was President of the United States. 1 NOTE Timber and rattlesnakes were thick and one's live was endangered unless 1 NOTE close vigilance was kept for their presence. 1 NOTE Indians roamed the country. 1 NOTE Deer, wild turkey, and animals of many description populated the county. 1 NOTE Wagons were equipped with only two wheels. 1 NOTE Oxen were used in farming and drawing the wagons. 1 NOTE Wild Moss Mill was in full operation. 1 NOTE Carrollton was merely a trading post and the old log cabin was the court 1 NOTE house. 1 NOTE Such things as wire fences had never been heard of. 1 NOTE In face, William Key remembers a way back when other people now living 1 NOTE in the county cannot recall. 1 NOTE He was married to Julia Ann Street in June 1888. This family consisted 1 NOTE of 1 NOTE five children, but two daughters with their Mother, have been called to 1 NOTE their 1 NOTE eternal reward. The sons are John of Bogard, and George W. and James 1 NOTE both of Tina. Mr. Key was the oldest member of a family of thirteen 1 NOTE children, eleven boys and two girls. Of this number only he and his 1 NOTE sister, 1 NOTE Pheobe Ann Briley of Iowa are living. His sister who was born in 1854, 1 NOTE was the youngest member of the family. 1 NOTE During the Civil War Mr. Key was a member of the Carroll county militia. 1 NOTE He was taken prisoner and served three months and three days, when he 1 NOTE was 1 NOTE released to return to his family and loved ones. "Those were trying 1 NOTE days" 1 NOTE Mr. Key said, "we left our families to shift for themselves and took our 1 NOTE guns 1 NOTE to meet the enemy. It might have been death, crippled for life or 1 NOTE endangered 1 NOTE health. It was all considered but we took our positions at the side of 1 NOTE those 1 NOTE who made like sacrifices." Mr. Key is now drawing a pension. 1 NOTE In his reminiscent mood this venerable citizen recalled the period when 1 NOTE he 1 NOTE frequently battled with tattle snakes. "We had two kinds to deal with," 1 NOTE he 1 NOTE said, "timber and the prairie rattlers. The largest one I ever killed 1 NOTE measured 1 NOTE about five feet in length and in circumference was about as big around 1 NOTE as an 1 NOTE average stove pipe." 1 NOTE "About my education, well it is like this, you see. We had subscription 1 NOTE schools in those days and I attended one of them. I was never a scholar 1 NOTE and I 1 NOTE studied the customary reading and writing with an occasional spelling 1 NOTE lesson. I was a good speller. I only attended school about three months 1 NOTE our 1 NOTE of the year and that was where I obtained my meager education. 1 NOTE "Indians? why I should say, plenty of them; but you know they never 1 NOTE harmed 1 NOTE us. They would ride through the woods, especially in the winter time, 1 NOTE camp 1 NOTE near our home, but we never had any trouble with them. 1 NOTE During my life I have worked over 100 teams of oxen. Some of them were 1 NOTE mighty contrary and detested their work in their rude way, but we 1 NOTE handled 1 NOTE them without much trouble. They traveled slow and the trips to the mill 1 NOTE required a great amount of time. You know about how fast an old cow can 1 NOTE walk? Well that is about how fast we traveled on these long trips. 1 NOTE Mr. Key has always been a republican. His first vote was cast for 1 NOTE Stephen 1 NOTE A. Douglas, who was then candidate for President. Since that date until 1 NOTE the 1 NOTE present time he has never failed to cast his vote but one time. That was 1 NOTE a day 1 NOTE when rain poured down in torrents and I was unable to reach the voting 1 NOTE precinct. 1 NOTE In religion, he early in life united with the Church of Christ and has 1 NOTE since 1 NOTE been faithful to this conviction. He has never held a church nor public 1 NOTE office 1 NOTE but has taken a reasonable active part in both. "I remember one time 1 NOTE when 1 NOTE they prevailed on me to run for Judge of the Western District. I never 1 NOTE even 1 NOTE considered such a thing. Neighbors and friends came to me but I waived 1 NOTE them away with the expression that I was not a scholar. 1 NOTE Thus, in a limited way, did an aged citizen recall his life, Wednesday. 1 NOTE In 1 NOTE crowning the facts of a long and useful life into a small apace is an 1 NOTE impossibility. William Key is enjoying the fruits of an active career 1 NOTE and his 1 NOTE conversations today are along such lines that lend to improve the 1 NOTE position of 1 NOTE the honored pioneer, as they are looked upon by citizens. He has always 1 NOTE taken much interest in the busy world and has kept well informed. His 1 NOTE creditable career has given him a name which his children and friends 1 NOTE delight to honor. 1 NOTE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Obituary For William Hardy Key , Feb., 1 NOTE 1936- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1 NOTE CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES AT AGE OF 99 1 NOTE W. Key 1 NOTE By Pat Calton 1 NOTE Grandfather Key was a farmer who lived all his life in Carroll 1 NOTE County, Missouri. He owned a farm near Coloma where he and my 1 NOTE grandmother raised four children. After the death of his wife he moved 1 NOTE in with his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Roy Bingham, in Bogard 1 NOTE Missouri. He was a devout member of the Church of Christ. He spent much 1 NOTE of his later life sitting on the couch in the dining room reading the 1 NOTE book of Revelation. He was also a staunch Republican as well as an 1 NOTE extremely frugal man. I can remember one time when he dropped a penny on 1 NOTE the floor and it rolled under the dining room table. He had me move the 1 NOTE chairs and retrieve the penny for him. After I had done this he told me 1 NOTE I could keep the penny. He did not own a car but every Friday my Aunt 1 NOTE Mary would drive him to Carrollton, ten miles away, to get his vitamin 1 NOTE shot. He passed away shortly before his 103rd birthday and is buried at 1 NOTE Coloma Missouri 1 NOTE Below is a poem I wrote about the John A. Key family: 1 NOTE The Life of John A. Key 1 NOTE When I was just a little girl, upon my grandpas knee, 1 NOTE I listened to the stories that my Grandpa told to me. 1 NOTE He told of how he was born in the year of 1859 1 NOTE In a little house not far from the Carroll County Line. 1 NOTE He was a hard working lad, and lived a christian life 1 NOTE And in 1888 he took Ailcey Adaline as his wife. 1 NOTE Their four children played and grew up on the family farm, 1 NOTE They went to church each Sunday--never doing any harm. 1 NOTE As the children grew and married, going separate ways 1 NOTE They ne'er forgot their childhood and the happy days. 1 NOTE Julia was the oldest, a fair and lovely child 1 NOTE And with the help of Ray brought eight children to this world. 1 NOTE Jesse came along next, the familys only son 1 NOTE He and Mildred raised four more--our story is half done. 1 NOTE Irene married Otey, they had a beautiful baby boy 1 NOTE Then she married Patrick and raised a girl, so coy. 1 NOTE Mary was wed to Roy--their sons they numbered two 1 NOTE Now you know where this is all leading to. 1 NOTE A whole new generation in the family tree. 1 NOTE A part of a wonderful family, I'm so very proud to be. 1 NOTE John and Ailcey lived and loved 'till 44, when Ailcey went away 1 NOTE To wait for John in Heaven--oh it was a mournful day. 1 NOTE John (my grandpa) went to join her in 1962, 1 NOTE To live again with Ailcey in a world so new. 1 NOTE They're waiting for us, patiently, with all their love 1 NOTE In the glorious home of our Heavenly Father, up above. 1 NOTE !MARRIAGE:Letter from Nadine Friedrichs; ; 3/23/1998; ; , Source Media Type: 2 CONT Letter 0 @I12@ INDI 1 NAME Cora Irene /Key/ 1 FAMS @F13@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 0 @I15@ INDI 1 NAME Raymond Patrick /Cahill/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 10 JAN 1901 2 PLAC Saline Co. He was 1 NOTE somewhat of a drifter until he was almost 43 years old and married my 1 NOTE mother. He made an attempt to settle down on a small farm near Coloma, 1 NOTE Missouri about the time I was born, but it wasn't until his retirement in 1 NOTE 1966 that he finally settled down in one place. As I was growing up he 1 NOTE owned or operated a number of businesses and farms. He was an avid 1 NOTE fisherman all his life. He also loved to sing, which he did not do 1 NOTE well. One day he and my husband, Bill Calton, were out in the boat going 1 NOTE down the lake when Bill heard a strange noise and thought something was 1 NOTE wrong with the outboard motor.
