Chief Engine Room Artificers and Engine Room Artificers

Extract from Order in Council N / 19, 30 November 1882.

Pay, Classification, &c.

4. The following rates of pay and classification to be established, to be applicable to men in future entered.

Engine Room Artificers.

4th Class. Men with less than 3 years service (including Acting Engine Room Artificers) 5s. 6d. a day.
3rd Class. Men with over 3 but less than 7 years service 5s. 9d. a day.
2nd Class. Men with over 7 but less than 12 years service 6s, a day
1st Class. Men with over 12 years service 6d. 6d. a day provided they re-engage for 10 years.

Acting time to reckon as service for increase of pay, but only in such proportions as we may fix.

Chief Engine Roam Artificers

2nd Class. Men with less than 6 years service as Chief Engine Room Artificer 7s. a day.
1st Class. Men with over 6 years service as Chief Engine Room Artificer 7s. 6d. a day.

5. The first engagement for continuous and General Service of an Engine Room Artificer to be for 12 years, and the requisite period of service to entitle a Chief Engine Room or Engine Room Artificer to pension, to be 22 years of approved service reckoning for pension under such Regulations as we may lay down.

6. An Engine Room Artificer to be eligible for advancement under such Regulations as we may establish, after 6 years approved service : advancement to Chief Engine Room Artificer to be made exclusively by us.

7. Chief Engine Room Artificers, Engine Room Artificers, and Acting Engine Room Artificers already in Your Majesty's Service (including any entered since 1st April 1882) to be allowed, subject to such Regulations as we may establish, the option of continuing to serve under the provisions hitherto in force. or of coming under these provisions for pay, engagement or re-engagement, continuous and general service, classification advancement, and service for pension : time already allowed to reckon towards pension to count as part of the 22 years service for pension required by these provisions

8. Engine Room Artificers, and Acting Engine Room Artificers now in the Service (Including any who entered since 1st April 182) who accept the provisions, to be allowed at the expiration of 10 years service counting for increase of pay, 6s. 6d. a day provided they re-engage for a further term of 12 years.

Stokers.

(Entries not being made at present.)

Able-bodied Men, of good character, qualified to serve as Stokers in Her Majesty's Ships, will be entered as required.

They must be between 18 and 25, and not less than 5 ft. 4 in. in height, nor less than 32 ins. round the chest.

And the Officers at all Coastguard Stations.

Also to the Royal Marine Recruiting Officers stationed in the following Towns:-

Birmingham Hull.
Bristol. Liverpool.
Cambridge. London.
Derby. Salisbury.
Edinburgh. Sunderland
Exeter. Taunton.
Glasgow.  

Candidates in the London District are examined on application at the Recruiting Department in Hemming's Row, St. Martin's Lane, Charing Cross.
