Her Majesty's Ships.

Admiralty 24 February 1857.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to direct that on or after 1st April, 1857, all previous orders relating to the issue of books, slates, &c., for the instruction of boys in Her Majesty's ships be considered as cancelled, and the following regulations substituted :

1. When any of Her Majesty's ships of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Rate are commissioned, the following books are to be demanded by the Chaplain, on the approval at the Captain, and kept in charge by the Chaplain end seaman's Schoolmaster, for the instruction of the boys, or such seamen as may attend the seaman's Schoolmaster:-

  • 12 English Grammar.
  • 12 Spelling Book Superseded.
  • 12 Introduction to Geography.
  • 6 Compendium of Geography.
  • 12 Arithmetic.
  • 24 First book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 12 Second book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 12 Third book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 6 Fourth book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 6 Filth book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 1 Dictionary, English (Professor Sullivan's).
  • 15 Watt's Scripture History.
  • 20 Bible, and Gospel History.
  • 60 Catechism, Church d England.
  • 2. The following books are to be supplies in like manner to ships of the 4th and 5th Rates:-

  • 8 English Grammar.
  • 8 Spelling Book Superseded.
  • 8 Introduction to Geography.
  • 4 Compendium of Geography.
  • 10 Arithmetic.
  • 18 First book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 12 Second book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 8 Third book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 4 Fourth book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 4 Filth book of Lessons, Irish Board
  • 1 Dictionary, English (Professor Sullivan's).
  • 10 Watt's Scripture History.
  • 16 Bible, and Gospel History.
  • 40 Catechism, Church d England.
  • One-half the number in this list of books is to be added to be added to the libraries of ships of the 6th Rate and Sloops, for the instruction of the boys by such person as the Captain of the ship may appoint.

    3. In all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Rates, when commissioned for sea service, and having the full complement of boys, the following pecuniary allowance is to be paid by the Paymaster, under the authority of the Captain to the Chaplain. or if no Chaplain to the Naval Instructor, for the purchase of slates, paper, &c. for the use of the boys� and Schoolmaster:-

    On being commissioned 4 0 0
    On each subsequent Quarter 1 10 0

    In all 4th and 5th Rates the allowance is to be as follows:-

      s. d.
    On being commissioned 8 0 0
    On each subsequent Quarter 1 0 0

    In all 6th Rates and Sloops the Captain may authorise an expenditure of:-

      s. d.
    On being commissioned 2 0 0
    On each subsequent Quarter 0 15 0

    4. The Flag Ships and Ordinary Guard Ships at Portsmouth, Devonport, Sheerness, Chatham, and Woolwich, are to be supplied with the books allowed for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Rates, once in three years.

    The Captains of these Flag and Ordinary Guard Ships may authorise the Paymasters to pay to the Chaplains of such ship the following sums of money, if so much be required, for the purchase of Maps or other necessary schoolbooks and the requisite slates, paper, &c.

    The proportion of slates, paper, &c. now allowed half-yearly is to cease.

    Sheerness �3 in each quarter
    Ordinary
    Ordinary Ship, Chatham

    Woolwich �2 in each quarter
    "Fisgard"

    To each ship of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Rate, the following Maps will be allowed with seaman�s Libraries:-

  • 1 Map of the World
  • 1 Map of Europe
  • 1 Map of the British Isles
  • 1 Map of Palestine
  • By Command of the Lordships
