Extracts From Circular 7 Of 29th March 1877

New Class of Skilled Shipwrights

Her Majesty having, by an Order in Council, sanctioned the establishment of a New Class of skilled Shipwright Artificers (Workers in Iron and Wood) for employment in Iron Ships; my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to issue the following Regulations :

NEW CLASS OF SKILLED SHIPWRIGHT ARTIFICERS FOR IRON SHIPS.

Pay.

	Continuous Service.			Non-Continuous Service.			Rating.

3rd Class	4	0	a day	3	9	a day	Shipwright (skilled).
2nd Class	4	6	a day	4	3	a day	Carpenter's Mate (skilled).
1st Class	4	9	a day	4	6	a day	Chief Carpenter's Mate (skilled).

Men must provide their own Tools, and no Tool Money will be allowed.

	QUALIFICATIONS.
3rd Class.-	Must be able to work in Iron and Wood, and pass at one of the Dockyards i.e., Sheerness, Chatham, Portsmouth, or Devonport.
2nd Class.-	Must be able to work in Iron and Wood, and pass the requisite examination.
1st Class.-	Must be able to work in Iron and Wood, and pass an examination equivalent to that for Carpenter.

ENTRY.

All Men from the Shore must enter in the 3rd Class ; and Non-Continuous Service Men must enter for four years certain.

Chief Carpenters' Mates at present in the Service will be eligible for the 1st Class, provided they can work in Wood and Iron and have passed for Carpenter.

Carpenters' Mates at present in the Service will be eligible for the 2nd Class

And

Shipwrights' and Carpenters' Crew will be eligible for the 3rd Class

if they can pass the Qualifying Examination in Wood and Iron.

ADVANCEMENT

Men in the 3rd Class will be eligible for promotion to the 2nd after one year's service, provided they pass the requisite examination, and there are vacancies; and men in the 2nd Class will be eligible for promotion to the 1st Class after one year's service in the 2nd Class if they have passed an examination equivalent to that for a Carpenter, and there are vacancies.

PENSIONS

These Skilled Artificers will be allowed to remain in the Service until they reach the age of 50 if Physically fit, but will not be allowed to draw any Pension whilst nerving.

These Regulations will take effect on the 1st April, 1877.
