The Portland Fire Brigade was established by the Urban District Council in 1903.

Fortunately, there were no serious fires in Portland during 1904. The Brigades were called out three times, but their assistance was only once required - at a chimney fire in Wakeham on July 23. New hydrant name plates have been fixed opposite the hydrants throughout the district.
