"In time of peace, the Ships in Ordinary at each Port are divided into divisions, and to each division is appointed a Master to superintend from the senior part of the list. Each ship has one Boatswain, 1 Gunner, 1 Carpenter, and 1 Cook, with their servants, to remain on board. Also, 1 Purser, who from an order in Council dated September, 1803, has permission to reside at a prescribed distance from the port, in order to be ready when called on : but he is not obliged as heretofore, to place, or continue a deputy or servant. The following number of seamen are allowed for each class of ships, who have been rated able for 6 calendar months :-

• 100 guns and upwards = 36 men ;
• 98, 96 guns = 32 men ;
• 80 ditto = 30 men ;
• 74 or 70 ditto = 26 men ;
• 64 ditto = 20 men ;
• 54 ditto = 16 men ;
• 50 ditto = 14 men ;
• 44 ditto = 12 men ;
• 38 or 28 ditto = 10 men ;
• 24 or 20 ditto = 8 men ;
• sloops = 6 men ;
• cutters, brigs, &c., no details, but one would assume that a number of men attached to the Admiral or Captain Superintendent of the Yard would be allocated to look after these smaller vessels as a whole."
