Circular No. 244

Admiralty 2 April 1856

In order to prevent the possibility of mistakes arising from the use of the hands in giving Signals to the Helmsman on board Her Majesty�s Ships, My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to direct that the Officer who may be directing the Steering shall use the Right Arm elevated when a Starboard Helm is required, and the Left Arm when a Port Helm is required.

Steering by Signs.

With reference to amended Circular, No. 244, dated 9^th Apr 1856, establishing certain directions for steering by signs, my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty having reason to believe that it has been found difficult uniformly to carry out in all Her Majesty�s Ships the regulations therein laid down, are pleased to direct that the Circular in question shall be considered cancelled.
