hoedown = a lively rollicking dance

hoecake = a thin bread made of cornmeal

holler = valley

hornswoggle = to swindle or hoax or trick

landed = owning land

make a fist = to succeed at something

mosey = shuffle along, stroll, amble, or move along

nary = never

nigh = near, close in time or place

notions = miscellaneous articles for sale

not one's funeral = not one's business or concern

picayune = used to signify something small or frivolous or trivial

plunder = baggage or personal belongings

poke = bag

pone = cornbread

puny = sick

short end of the stick = to come out of a situation disadvantaged

tother = the other

vittles = food

whup = whip

widder = widow

yourn = yours
