[He was a French Huguenot. Huguenots were French
Protestants of the 16th and 17th centuries, members of the French Reformed
Communion, and adherents of a Swiss political movement (influenced by
Besancon Hugues, a 1532 Swiss political leader) of eidgnot
confederate). They fled France by the thousands following religious
persecution initiated around 1661 by the king, Louis XIV. By 1662,
the number of Protestants in France had grown to over one million; in 1685 Louis
XIV revoked the "Edict of Nantes"
and made Protestantism illegal, with the result of more than 400,000 fleeing the
country.]
