HENDERSON STATION RAID of 1862 at Henderson Tennessee.
Allen K. Jones was among the 50 outstanding citizens who were assessed for damages inflicted upon Henderson Station. The Union had acquired the railroad station since the latter part of October, 1862. A 66 man detachment from an Illinois Regiment was guarding the station and outlying bridges. The Federals used the station as a supply house for guns, ammunition and camping supplies. On the morning of November 25th, a confederate raid was made on Henderson Station. The depot was destroyed, about 100 bales of cotton, the water tank, and the arms and camp equipment that belonged to the Union Army. One Federal soldier was killed during the raid, 33 were captured and 29 Union soldiers ran for their lives. Through embarrassment, the Federals decided that someone must pay for the damage. Through the assistance of northern sympathizers, they elected to assess the most outstanding Southern sympathizers to pay for the damage. The money collected was to be paid to the U.S. Treasurer and to any citizen who had a monetary interest in the property that was damaged. All of the collected money was not turned into the U.S. Treasury, nor was it ever accounted for. In 1877, it was legally determined that the assessments and collections were illegal in the first place. That the bulk of the loss belonged to the railroad company and to a few private citizens. That only the company equipment and arms belonged to the Federals.
Injured parties were allowed to make separate claims against the U.S. Government for a portion of the original assessment. Names of these assessed was listed and sent to Washington. Through error the names of James O. Hendricks and Allen K. Jones were omitted from the list. Allen K. Jones tried repeatedly to collect his claim but was not able to receive a dime. Mr. Hendricks probably didnt either. Supporting letters indicate the changes of senators and representatives handling the claims and the omissions of the two named persons from the original list had caused the delay in reimbursements.
Note: Supporting correspondence from the House of Representatives U.S. dated May 27, 1884, indicate the claim was never paid. Allen K. Jones died in 1885.

Henry McCewen Jones born April 27 1833 died March 12 1898. Henry married Aug 29 1878 Sarah Frances SPENCER born Nov 13 1852. She died April 20 1930.     Children:   (1) Jasper McEwen Jones born July 22 1883 died Jan 25 1954   (2) Major Chapman Jones born Nov 28 1886 died Oct 25 1933   (3) Hugh Ned Jones born Feb 23 1889 died March 21 1941 ←
Picture (taken Feb 23 1917)   (4) Drucilla Evelyn Jones born Sept 3 1891 died Nov 3 1902.     (Henry McCewen Jones is sometimes shown in records as Mc Jones)

OBITUARY:   Henry McEwen Jones was born in Chester Co TN, near Mifflin TN. has lived there all his life with the exception of 14 months during the war. He joined the 8th Texas Regiment under General Wheeler in the Confederate Army where he remained until the war closed. He came home where he was happily married to Miss Sarah Frances Spencer the 27th of Aug 1878. He joined the Missionary Church at Friendship in September 1888. Departed this life March the 12th 1898; aged 64 years, 10 months and 15 days. He died of pneumonia, was sick something near two weeks. He bore his suffering with great fortitude and spoke frequently to his folks and neighbors around his bed side about going home to that long home of rest where family ties will be broken no more.       Bro W J Hodges preached his funeral at his residence to a large congregation of his relatives and friends. His remains were then conveyed to the family grave yard near by and his body was there confined to the narrow limits of the tomb to remain until Gabriel sounds his trumpet for that resurection morn. he leaves a wife and four little children to mourn his death. His wife loses a dear companion, his children a good father and his friends a good neighbor. He was a Christian man, a good citizen, always ready and willing to help his neighbor and fellowman. We will say to this bereaved family to weep not for him, he has gone to rest where sickness, sorrow and death are felt no more. We must trust in Jesus and live so as to be prepared to go when he calls us to meet death, after which, by the help of God, we will meet those who have go on before. Your friend, J. T. PRIDDY.     (from a loose obit in Family Bible.     James T "Jim" PRIDDY was a brother-in-law as J T Priddy married Eliza Drucilla Jones.)

Hugh Ned Jones Home   The house had been vacant many years in 1992 when these pictures were taken.   In the "flat" area in the top picture once stood a two story log home that had 5 bedrooms. This (2) story Log House had been the Jones home until additions were made in 1944 (three rooms across back & weather boarded) to the house in the picture. The two story log home was torn down about 1947. I can remember the two story log house.
The House is in the Glendale Community of Chester Co TN.   Another view of House Well house is shown at the end of the house.     The house was lived in by family members into the 1970's. The front half of the house is two large log rooms with a fireplace between the two rooms. This was the farm kitchen prior to the Civil War. Rooms were added on to the rear of the house and wood siding adding over the logs.
I would like to Thank Joyce L. Jones Pruitt for most of the information on this site.   She was doing genealogy research long before the Internet came into being - many years before. She made several trips to South Carolina many years ago to gather information on the JONES line. Joyce Jones Pruitt was the first to join the DAR through Jacob Jones.     (I started seriously in the mid 1980's. Aunt Joyce had been doing research for many years at that time.)

JONES CEMETERY

Only on findagrave is this cemetery called Jones-Bond
JONES-BOND CEMETERY
This cemetery is in the Glendale Community of Chester Co, TN.     When this cemetery was started the property belonged to the Jones family and remained their property as long as it was an active cemetery. It was always known as the JONES CEMETERY until some one misnamed it on findagrave. From the crossroad where Glendale School once stood go East on the Jones road about 1 mile. The cemetery is behind Eva Mae Jones home (1970's and 1980's) in a field. It was cleaned by the Jones family. Allen Kay Jones organized the cleaning and the family met for a reunion and cemetery cleaning in 1977. The saplings were all cut down and the cemetery left in good shape. As of Sept 2012 no more work has been done that I know of.   A tornado hit this cemetery in Spring 2013. David Jones and perhaps others sawed up the downed trees to help restore the cemetery.     DIRECTIONS: To go to the cemetery get off the Jones Road by turning left (North in front of the Ed and Arlene Jones IVY home in the 1980's) on a narrow road and go a few hundred yards to where an old road crosses (pre 1940) and walk West a couple hundred yards to the cemetery in the trees.   This cemetery is about 1/2 mile due West of the Hugh Ned Jones home - still standing 2012, but no one has lived in it for at least 20 years as of 2012.

JONES are buried in this cemetery.     A tornado damaged trees and a few tombstones Spring 2013. The tall Hugh Ned JONES double rock with his wife, Vassie Jay Eason Jones was toppled. Fortunately it was not damaged. A grand daughter had the stone up righted and placed correctly.     A few stones were knocked over and broken when a large tree fell across them.
