Ackworth
is a large village about two miles south of Pontefract in West Yorkshire. It is supposed to have derived its name from the Anglo-Saxon Ake or Aken, oak, and Uurt, worth – meaning a hamlet or village. However, it could equally also come from Acca’s worth, i.e., Acca’s enclosure – Acca being an Anglo-Saxon surname. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the spelling is Aceuurde. Certainly by the 19th century the spelling had been standardised to Ackworth.[Source: A Short History of the parish church of St. Cuthbert, Ackworth & the chapel-of-ease, All Saints]
