I found a book copyrighted in 1932 that includes some information regarding the Conn's - it is "The History of Cherokee County" by Rev. Lloyd G. Marlin.

In the book's "Personal Sketches and Family Accounts" chapter, pages 257-258, the following is included in the section regarding James H. Holcomb:

"Ball Ground. Born 1876 in Conn's Creek District, Cherokee Co. Son of B. F. Holcomb and Elsie Conn Holcomb; grandson of Thomas H. Holcomb and of Samuel Conn; great-grandson of Henry Holcomb."

"Henry and Thomas H. Holcomb came from North Carolina during Indian days and settled on Conn's Creek. B. F. Holcomb fought in the Confederate Army; he is still living at the age of 84; has reared nineteen children, producing nearly all they used; remembers a trade between his early neighbors, the Hendrixes and the Tates, for much of the land now comprising the Tate marble quarries."

"Samuel Conn also came to Cherokee Co. from North Carolina during the early '30's, and Conn's Creek, Conn's District, a church and a schoolhouse were later named for him. He obtained a large tract of land on the upper Etowah from the Indians, trading them a pony for it. Several of the Conns had Civil War records."

This book also had several other references to the Conn's: In the list of county officials on page 187, Allen C. Conn was included in the list of "Ordinaries" with the date Jan. 6, 1893 beside his name and Cicero Conn was included inthe list of "Tax Collectors" with the date of Jan. 9, 1873 beside his name.

Conn's listed with Civil War records in the "Companies of the Cherokee Legion, Georgia State Guards Calvary" are as follows:

T. M. Conn, 1st Corp., Company C, "Cherokee Lincoln Killers"

Francis M. Conn, Private, Company C, "Cherokee Lincoln Killers"

Francis M. Conn, Private, Company F, 28th Regiment, "Cherokee Georgia Mountaineers"

A. C. D. Conn, Private, Company E, 36th Regiment

Daniel J. Conn, Private, Company E, 36th Regiment

Thomas N. Conn, Private, Company E, 36th Regiment

There is 2 other sons of Samuel that also served in the war James Madison Conn and George W.Conn, both were in Company F,18th Reg-Davis Guards, along with brother Thomas N. Conn,James was wounded at the 2nd Manassas, then transfered to Co A 3rd Battn.Ga.Sharpshooters,Captured at Petersburg Va,was sent to Elmira,N.Y.
George W. Conn died from his wounds at the 2nd Manassas and is buried in Manssas Cem.

Alfred Kimsey Conn, born 8/11/1850 in Cherokee Co., GA to Samuel and Elizabeth Ingram Conn. Alfred married 1867 to Harriett Elvira Wood of Dawson Co. GA. In 1880 they lived in Polk Co. GA, and by 1900 were in Floyd Co., GA. In 1910, Alfred is listed with new wife Eva Hollingsworth in Gordon Co. GA. Shortly after 1910, they moved somewhere in AL, where Alfred was a prison guard. He died abt 1913. Where?

I may have confused Isaac with his grandson as to which was preacher. (I can't find the evidence I had of the 'preacher', Isaac. But I think it was oral history from Ruby Conn Ficklin in 1992.)

I know you sent me a long email last March. I finally found it tonight and can't determine if I ever answered you. If I didn't I apologize.

As to James Pierce, I too believe that Nancy E. Pierce was of this family. Two bits of info--but only circumstantial evidence: (you probably have this)

After James M. Conn and Nancy Pierce married In McLennan Co. in 1869 they had one child in Texas. (Didn't see them in them in the 1870 census.) I know they returned to Cherokee Co. GA on the death of James father Samuel Conn in 1873. They had 4 more children while in GA. By 1880 James and Nancy had returned to Texas, but this time they were in the census for Upshur County in East Texas. By 1900 James M. Conn was in Indian Terr., Chickasaw Nation as were your Pinckney and our William (W.H. Conn).

I also suspect that James Pierce's 3 youngest children (orphans?) were by 1880 living with Mary Conn in McLennan County(1880 census). This Mary may be the younger sister (b. 1835) of Isaac Conn (b. 1818). She was living with William and Mary Conn (Isaac's parents)as shown in 1860 census for Sevier County AR. The evidence for this relationahip is in the 1900 census for Pottowatomie Co. OK. where Mary shows up as the aunt of your Pinckney (you probably have this).

I don't believe I ever posted your info to my site. Now I have even more from Joy Hunt a direct desc of Samuel Conn and she has a lot on James Madison Conn.

And yet I cannot find proof that our William Conn (b. 1795) is the brother of Samuel. I have collected a lot of theoretical Conn data from NC and SC. No real proof.

If I did not answer your previous questions let me know. Did I mention that Ruby is the daughter of Luevina Ella Coleman and Sanders Conn (b 1881--son of W.H. Conn and Martha Leppard). I like to think Luevena Ella Coleman was somehow related to Bird Coleman but I don't know how. Her father was Frances Marion Coleman b. 1853 GA).

Ella and Sanders are also buried at Vista Cemetery in Pottowatomie County. I have pictures of the tombstones. You probably saw the portrait of Sanders and Luevina Ella at my site.

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate your input! Believe me, I do not doubt your research. I just wondered in what library you found the information about the Church roll. We too are trying to figure out the Conn puzzle. There are so many of the different families intertwined there has to be a distant relation. Another problem is their use of the same family names over and over again. We had never heard that Isaac Conn b. 1818 Ga. was a preacher. He had a grandson Isaac D. Conn that was a preacher. I wonder if this James Pierce next to Bird Coleman on the 1870 census was related to James Madison Conn's wife, N. E. Pierce. Thanks again!!!!!  art hudson

Hello, Cousins!

Although I can't answer the questions on our native American ancestry, I can clarify a couple of things for you.

Yes, Samuel Conn founder of Conn's Creek, Cherokee County, Ga., is the father of the James Madison Conn who married Nancy Pierce.

I am also a direct decendant of Samuel Conn and Elizabeth Ingram through their first son, Francis Marion Conn.

After the War Between the States, several of Samuel's sons and their families (they had 14 children) initially moved to Texas, settling first around Falls County (near Waco).

That's where Francis Marion died of his war wounds and where his last child, my grrgrandfather Joseph Johnson Conn was born.

Anyway, I am so glad to find relative connections. Finally after many years, am back at working at putting genealogy together. Recently put photo of Samuel Conn, as well as several from Conn's Creek, his gravestone, etc. on my page at ancestry.com if you can access it. It's called The Conn's of Conn's Creek, Georgia.

Would love to talk and share info.

Joy Conn Hunt
334-673-2772

Perhaps Samuel was not related to Isaac at all or perhaps they were only distantly related. I was thinking maybe William was Samuel's brother, cousin, uncle or??

Do you know the names of Samuel's brothers, uncles etc?

Isaac was the son of William Conn. I believe William was the son of one of the Conn's that had Revolutionary War Bounty Land warrants in Franklin County. I believe Samuel was of the same general family. (based on land and tax records)

Here is why I think there was a connection between Samuel's family--especially James Madison Conn--and the family of William and Isaac:

As you know, James Madison Conn and Nancy Emilene were married near Waco TX 18 June 1869--I believe at the Bosque Baptist Church of Christ where Isaac Conn was a member. I believe Isaac was the peacher at that church.

According to the 1870 Federal Census for McLennan Co. TX, Isaac lived next door to the Pierces--probably Nancy's parents. In the 1880 census for McLennan Co. Isaac's sister Mary is the head of household in which the three Pierce children live.

Then in the 1900 census for Indian Territory, James and his second wife, and family live in the same vicinity as Isaac's son and his family.

Of course I have all the documentation for this--too much to post here. I hope to put it all on the web soon--hopefully before end of year.

The Bosque Church records are from:

McLennan County, TX Marriage Records, Vol 1 1850-1870, Central Texas Genealogical Society, Waco Public Library. Marriage 127, J.M. Conn to N.E. Pierce, 18 Jun 1860. See also membership rolls, Bosque Baptist church, 6 miles north of Waco, August 6, 1870: W.H. Conn and Bird Coleman.

I see now that I did not necessarily find Isaac listed as a member. Somewhere someone told me he was a preacher there. However in the census of the same year (1870) Isaac is shown living next door to his son William [W.H.]Conn and one dwelling removed from James M. Conn. It seems reasonable that Isaac was a member of the same church as his son and [possible] nephew. This is a summary of the census listing:

1870 U.S. Census, McLennan County, TX, West of the Brazos; NARA N593, Roll 1598, p. 157. Shows dwellings:
# 747 William Conn head age 30 [This is W.H.and family]
# 748 Isaac Conn age 52 [Isaac b. abt 1818 GA and family]
# 750 James Pierce age 35 [and family]
#751 Bird Coleman age 47 [Bird b. abt 1826 GA] mary lou ficklin

I am very possitive that they are the same person, however I have Samuel Conn, father of James Madison Conn, as being born in North Carolina, but I have been known to be wrong.

James was my gggg-grandfather from my maternal grandmother's side, Mattie Alice Conn. I have John B. Conn as father of Samuel Conn. John m. Elizabeth UNKNOWN and that is all the info I have at this time on John. I may not even have the right person in that spot.

As for Isaac Conn I am going to have to more research on that. The Isaacs I have do not fit the bill, again I could be wrong.

A big part of my Conns did the Georgia thing moving down into Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. There is a place in New Mexico calle the Bosque Farms, Hope twnshp in Eddy county. I wish I could post some pictures on here. I have many pictures of the Conn family and Howard family from in and around the Bosque Farms.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you-

email July 29 2010 regarding
Isaac Starling Conn buried Francis Oklahoma 1818\

I am doing genealogical research for my family who dwelt in the Oklahoma Territory during the land rush of the late 1800s up to the present, hoping to compile it into a collection of stories detailing what life was like and the politics of the time.

In the course of my research I came across what I believe is one of your ancestors buried in the Cedar Grove cemetery in tiny Francis, Oklahoma Isaac Starling Conn. The reason why the name stuck out to me is because I think he may be the first person buried in the cemetery! The tombstone has the dates 9/11/1818 8/9/1892 and the epithet Veteran written on it. He died at the age of 73 right in the midst of the multiple Indian Territory land rushes taking place between 1891 -1895 (the Cherokees in 1893 being the largest and best publicized and not too far from the town of Francis which is actually within the Chickasaw reservation.)

I saw that you had some questions about an Isaac Conn on your website (http://www.ldpierce.com/conn.html) and I thought this information might be helpful to you.

Blessings,

Shan Scroggins
