(The children's father, John Swindells, a transplanted northerner who became editor of the Dallas Herald in 1859 when James Latimer died from a fall, exerted a powerful influence upon the town of Dallas through the newspaper. Born in New York City, he moved to Dallas & purchased an interest in the paper from Latimer in 1854. He then married Minerva Crutchfield, daughter of Dallas innkeepers Frances Maria & Thomas F. Crutchfield. Along with John W. Lane, he assumed control of the newspaper upon Latimer's death & continued in that capacity until 1876 when he bacame private secretary to Governor Richard B.
