Descendants of Jans Jurig Schmidt (John George Smith) Part 1

This Genealogy of Jans (or Hans) Jurig Schmidt is the work of Roy Lattimer Smith, with contributions from Paul K Smith and Della Mae Smith Plyler, prepared in the 1979-80 time period, and heavily annotated by Della. Generation 9 was added by this editor, son of Della. Because it is a large tree, it consists of three separate files. Part 1 consists if Generations 1through 5; Part 2 consists on Generations 6 and 7; and Part 3 consists of Generations 8 and 9.

Generation No. 1

 1. JANS JURIG [1] SCHMIDT was born 1717 in Alsace Lorraine, Germany, and died January 16, 1756. He married CATHERINE BARBARA SCHAFFER, daughter of ADAM SCHAFFER and ANNA WEILAND.

Notes for JANS JURIG SCHMIDT:

Schmidt migrated from along the Rhine River in Germany, sailed from Rotterdam abaord the Ship Winter Galley. Landed at Philadelphia in September 1738, at the age of 21. Settled on a farm near his friend Wilhelm Best, who had migrated in 1737, also aboard the Winter Galley. Their farms located near present day Walnutport, Lehigh Twp, Northampton County along the Lehigh River. The farm of Jacob Dorn was nearby.

Schmidt was killed by Indians along with 9 other German settlers on January 16, 1756. The Indians had burned a church and killed many nearby settlers. This information is taken from a copy of the Pennsylvania Gazette, January 1756, written in German of the raid of the Moravian Indians from Bethlehem PA, and the defeat of Gnadenhutten. His last son, John George Smith I, was born after his death.

Notes for CATHERINE BARBARA SCHAFFER:

Catherine was a sister of Anna Susanna, wife of Wilhelm Best. Catherine was executor of her husband's will. She married John Dorn, son of Jacob Dorn, at Walnutport. In 1777 they moved as a family to Westmoreland Cty, as a group with a number of other families.

 2. JOHN GEORGE [2] SMITH I (JANS JURIG [1] SCHMIDT) was born September 02, 1756 in Walnut Port, North Hampton Cty, PA, and died December 23, 1826. He married ELIZABETH MICKAFOOS. She was born 1759, and died 1845.

Notes for JOHN GEORGE SMITH I:

John George Smith was born after the death of his father at present day Walnutport, Northampton Cty, PA, near Lehigh Gap and the Appalatchian Trail.

At age 21, along with his mother and stepfather, brothers and sisters, moved through the wilderness over the mountains following traders' paths Indian and game trails to Westmoreland Cty to the area known at that time as Brush Creek Settlement or the Palantine Settlement.

Court records show that he owned 300 acres of land located along what was then known as Old Glade Road where the village of Arona is located today. Old Glade Road was the road from Somerset to Pittsburgh. His land was bordered by farms owned by Anthony Stewart, John Stough, Lewis Long, and the Errat Claim.

Generation No. 3

 3. JOHN GEORGE [3] SMITH, SR. (JOHN GEORGE [2], JANS JURIG [1] SCHMIDT) was born February 05, 1785 in Brush Creek, PA, and died September 18, 1877 in Armstrong County, PA. He married CATHERINE EVA NOLF 1807, daughter of LAWRENCE NULPH and MARGARET. She was born 1786, and died March 07, 1868 in Armstrong County, PA.

Notes for JOHN GEORGE SMITH, SR.:

The following is based on census records, land deeds, surveys, Bible notations, and legend.

He was a gunsmith who manufactured muzzle loading guns. He was a hunter, lover of nature, an expert at calling wild game with a self-made buckhorn call, a fisherman, and trapper. He was a part-time government employee. Ge was employed as a surveyor's assistant, axman, rodman, and chain carrier with the Holland Land Company. It was through this employment he became acquainted with the Armstrong Cty area.

He moved from Brush Creek to Armstrong Cty between 1807 and 1810, first to a location between Distant and Putneyville, remaining there just a short time, then moved to his Father-in-Law's farm on the west bank of Mahoning Creek. According to legend, his first son was born at Petersburg (present-day Timlin) August 4, 1809, which is the area of the west bank of the Mahoning.

On September 17, 1839 he purchased from Willeneck & Co. a division of the Holland Land Co. 105 acres. This land later became known as the Best farm. Presently (in 1980) owned by the Stroup family, owners and operators of the Creek Bend Camp Grounds, where the Smith reunion is held.

On September 18, 1846 he purchased 20 acres 140 perches of the Orr tract in Mahoning Twp for the sum of $20. Source: History of Armstrong Cty, by Robert Walker Smith, published 1883.

He married Catherine Nolf, daughter of Casper and Phoebe. The Nolfs are buried in the old Smith Cemetery surrounded by a stone fence. George and Catherine are buried in the Eddyville Cemetery at St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

Many of the descendents of John George Smith, Sr. worked and spent time at or near Weedville, during the great timber harvest of that area (1860s until early 1900s).

Notes for GEORGE D SMITH:

Civil War vet. Enlisted 1862 PA Volunteers, Co B, 78th Reg. Wounded twice. Once in the wrist by a bayonet, and once by a bursting shell shrapnel. Participated in battles of Stone River, TN, Chickamaugua, Lookout Mountain, Nashville, and Atlanta. Was only one of 70 men to escape capture at Chickamaugua.

1866: GD Smith purchased a timber tract in Elk Cty and engaged in lumbering for 8 years. Also operated a boat yard for several years, near Eddyville, where flat boats were constructed. Boats were constructed bottom side up, then turned over when launched. The flat boats were used to transport pigiron and lumber to Pittsburgh during the spring high water runoff.

She was born November 29, 1851 in Echo, PA, and died November 26, 1921 in Eddyville, Armstrong County, PA.

Notes for GEORGE J. SMITH: Nicknamed "Big George Smith" not because of his relatively short stature, but because he wore a size 13 shoe. He was givem no middle name - added the J himself. Lived on his father's farm, part of his father's inheritance.

Notes for SAVILLA CATHERINE WISE: Could neither read nor write, but had an exceptional memory for birth, death, and wedding dates. Buried in Eddyville, Armstrong Cty, PA
