Jonathan Poff
According to Elgin P. Kintner M.D. author of "A Family History and Tour
Guide of Reuel B. Prichett and Ella Poff",Jonathan Poff was born about
1780. His name appeared on the tax records in 1798 of Augusta Co., Va. .
Chalkley records (2:329) show that Jonathan Poff and Mary Hartshough
married on Jan 10, 1797. She was the daughter of Englebert Hartshough.
His name was on the tax rolls of Montgomery Co. until he purchased land
in Franklin Co. in 1821. This property was located at the headwaters of
the Pigg River. This is on the edge of the plateau near the Floyd and
Franklin Co. line west of Rocky Mount , Va.
Jonathan's will was dated March 26,1845 and was probated on October
6,1845 which means he most likely died in September of 1845. He gave all
of his property to his wife and appointed his friend John Long as the
executor. Appraisal of his property showed that it consisted of a house,
a colt, 2 hogs, 10 barrels of corn, 75 dozen oats and some tools. He may
have been buried in the Pigg River Church Cemetery.
