Jackson Cemetery

Following the Civil War in 1865, Hannah Jackson, 50,
and her son and daughter-in-law,
both age 25 years, moved from Georgia to the Moscow community. All
three were freed
mulatto slaves who came to Texas seeking a new Life. By 1870 they had
moved to the
Midway community of Polk County where her son, Nathan Griggs worked
as a carpenter
and Hannah worked as a domestic housekeeper. Hannah lived with Nathan
and Josephine
Griggs. She died on his property in 1885 and he carved her name and
date of death on a
large stone for her grave. Hannah Jackson is the only known burial
in the Jackson Cemetery.

Location: From Livingston go East on U.S.
Highway 190 for 17.3 miles; turn left on Midway
Center Road and go 1.6 miles; turn left on an abandoned road/trail
and go .3 miles; turn right on
a dim road; go 250 yards near top of hill; then take 30 steps at right
to the stone.
