Rev. Samuel U. Jones Dies at Age of 81
Funeral Held Saturday for Well Known Pastor and Missionary
"Rev. Samuel U. Jones, 81 years of age, died
at his home near Corrigan last Friday after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. E. Harry of Corringan at Union
Springs cemetery Saturday afternoon.
A familiar figure in Polk County for more
than a half century, Rev. Samuel Jones served as pastor in a number of
Medothist churches in East Texas and numbered among his friends people
not only of this county but several adjoining counties.
Rev. Mr. Jones was born in Mississippi but
came to Texas in 1877 and settled near Moscow. He had been a member
of the Congregational Methodist Church since he was 16 years old.
In 1909 he was ordained a minister and in addition to serving as pastor
of several churches, he was for a year a missionary in Houston and Angelina
Counties. For a long time he preached every Sunday at Kickapoo and
walked the 20 miles from Moscow every Saturday, regardless of weather.
He would walk back on Monday or Tuesday, always being careful not to travel
on Sunday.
Rev. Samuel Jones had never married. He is
survived by a number of nephews and nieces among whom are S.W. Jones of
Goodrich, and Mrs. D. Deggs of Corrigan."
