The Rowe Cemetery, also known
as the Rowe-Dunnam Cemetery, is a small family cemetery
enclosed by a wrought iron fence. It was created in 1850.
Samuel A. Rowe and his family came
to the Republic of Texas in late 1839 from Talbot County, Georgia.
They purchased property and
settled near the community of Colita on Long Tom Creek. Samuel
Rowe had married Mary A.
Weathers in Georgia and came to Texas with four children and his mother-in-law
Sarah Weathers.
He was a farmer by occupation but became Postmaster of Colita in 1853
and laid out the town of
Kickapoo the same year. On February 3, 1854 he was appointed
a commissioner to purchase a
tract of land for an Alabama Indian tribe. This land is now a part
of the Alabama Coushatta Indian
Reservation. Mr. Rowe served both tribes as their Indian Agent.
