Catherine Elizabeth (Leroy) Caron Griggs, 88, of Mill Road, Stamford, Vt., the oldest living native of the town, died Monday at the Adams Nursing Home, Franklin Street, North Adams. She had been a patient there for the past eight months.
Mrs. Griggs who was interviewed in March 1979 for a feature story about her life as a youngster, had her recollections and those of a sister, Lydia, as well as those of other senior citizens in the town, recorded by the Friends of the Library, for an oral history collection. These recordings were made available at the "Roots in Stamford" program at the school, according to the article. At that time, Mrs. Griggs quipped, "If they're going to have other antiques there at the show, I'm going to go sit there in a rocking chair."
She was born Dec. 9, 1893, a daughter of Emile and Mary Ann (Zwahler) Leroy. She attended schools there.
Mrs. Griggs had lived in the city for several years before returning to Stamford 15 years ago.
She worked for many years at Arnold Print Works, Adams, and later worked for 15 years with Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams.
Mrs. Griggs was a member of the Stamford Community Church and the Stamford Senior Citizens Club.
Her first husband, Frederick Caron, died in 1934 and her second husband, Carl Griggs, died in 1967.
She leaves three sons, Roy F. Caron of Williamstown, Arthur E. Caron of Stamford, Vt., and Carl Griggs of Clarksburg; two brothers, George Leroy of North Adams, and John Leroy of Cheshire; two sisters, Mrs. Gordon (Lydia) Williams of Stamford, Vt., and Mrs. Eugene (Anna) Perkins of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; grand-nieces and grandnephews.
Services for members of the family will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Auge-San Soucie-Simmons Funeral Home, North Adams. Williar Busl, pastor of the Stamford (Vt.) Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Houghton Cemetery, Stamford, Vt.
There will be no calling hours. The family suggests donations in her memory to the Stamford Community Church.
