Born: Mar 9, 1912 in
Vienna, Austria. Died: abt 2012 in Yorkshire, England *geni
Note: Rebeka (nee Blankstein) Russman *geni was a friend of Gretl. They were a Czech family and her mother took out Czech citizenship after the First World War. The result was that when Gretl came to England, she counted as a "friendly alien" and was allowed to have a radio set, whereas my mother as an "enemy alien" could not have one. Wasn't that daft? Gretl eventually settled in Yorkshire and lived to be a hundred. She had a cousin called Otto Grunfeld *geni who also lived there. He went through Theresienstadt and wrote a book about it afterwards "The Survivor's Path" paperback (1/1/1995) - on Amazon, etc. Gretl developed vascular dementia in her 90's and was moved to a home where she died soon after her hundredth birthday.

Note: Publisher of "The Survivor's Path" paperback (1/1/1995) - on Amazon, etc. Obituary: "My father, Otto Grunfeld, who has died aged 90, was a survivor of the Holocaust, in which his entire family were killed. Born in rural Czechoslovakia, where his parents, Moritz and Hilda (nee Lobovics), had a smallholding and soda factory, he was the younger of two sons. His older brother, Paul, was a great influence on him: Paul played the violin and Otto began the piano. As the Nazis’ influence grew, the parents tried in vain to send their two children to Israel, and then in 1942 came the forced movement of Jews from Prague to Theresienstadt ghetto..."
