THE BOHEMIAN BAPTIST CHURCH, Portland, TN.
Established before 1911. Members and their families who had been Catholic, converted to Christianity and fled Czechoslovakia due to persecution, most going to Chicago, Il. Six families came to Franklin, KY / Portland TN. Area by 1906. At first they met in each others’ homes, served by (lay-men) Brothers Adolph Burysek and Edw. F. Ertner. The Brethren decided to build a church building, and the land was donated by the Mazanec family and it was finished in 1911. Pastors listed (the early ones) preached during the summer only.)

* Business Meeting Minutes 12 May 1957, voted to discontinue Czech service for the present time.

July 7, 1957 (Close of Revival Services) Candidates for baptism, after their confession of faith: Miss Florence Stewart, Miss Louise Keen, Miss Lucille Keen, Miss Mary Jacobs, Miss Gardine Jacobs, Miss Joann Nesbarba. The Baptismal Services were held at the river near Wilks Store, in the afternoon.

Nov. 19, 1955 Business Meeting, opened 7:23 p.m., in prayer by C. H. Mazanec. Sunday School requirements (for membership) set, Attendance 3 Sundays in a row; Motion made by Rose Nesbarba, 2nd by Lillie McGee, motion carried. Ended 8:15 p.m.

Sept. 1, 1959 Business Meeting; a Nominating Committee was chosen: Joe Prohaska, Jim Holubicka, Rose Nesbarba. Joe Prohaska chairman. Pastor Richard Mazanec asked for a release as pastor, so that he may study at Omaha Baptist Bible Institute (for 1 year) to the purpose that he has been impressed to work in France as a missionary. He would need to leave by Sept. 9th. The release was granted and meeting closed with prayer. (Romans 8:28)

Revival Meeting Aug 16-13, 1959, evangelist Eldridge Miller, of Nashville, preached, 10 made a profession of faith and 9 were baptized Sept 20th in the afternoon at Portland Baptist Church: Mrs. John Stewart, Wayne Stewart, Diane Stewart, Glenn Prohaska, Melvin Stewart, Louise Burton, Jimmy Burton, Larry Burton, Glen Burton. Jerry Stewart accepted the Lord, but not baptized. Mrs. Ann Stewart, a member of Blue Door Church moved her membership.

Business Meeting Oct 11, 1959 - church officers kept from previous year. Vacation Bible School report. (July 13-18) average attendance was 55 children plus helpers. Teachers: Beginners Class: Betty Holubicka, Rose Nesbarba, Joann Nesbarba, Lucille Keen Primary Dept. Mary Lou Prohaska, Linda Burysek, Lillie Vejr, Jean Hendricks, Mildred Hendricks Jr. Dept Bro. Semi Annual Business Meeting April 24, 1960 Discussion of the Building Program - 4 room Sunday School addition plan presented by Jim Holubicka. Estimate given by contractor $1652.00. Financing was discussed , voted on that members of the church would try pledging the amount. (in 8 weeks) if 2/3 collected work will continue. June 12, 1960 Special meeting to discuss amounts pledged for building. $1325.00 (lacking $277.00) The church voted to “pay a note” on the $277.00 If it was not pledged before building was completed.

Revival Meeting July 31st to Aug 7th 1960, Evangelist Rev. Gus Peters, Pastor of Baptist Church at Cynthiana, Ky. 3 professed faith: Bobbie Morris, Jimmie Crawford, Jerry Stewart. They were baptized Sunday afternoon Aug. 21 at Portland Baptist Church.

Aug 28th, 1960 Dedication of the Sunday School room addition was held and a Dedicatory Message was given by Bro. Eldridge Miller from Nashville. Building report was “addition paid in full, with no debt. "Total cost $1,671.80."

Aug 28th, 1960 “We, for the first time, used individual cups at our communion service. (Donated by a member of our church)”

Oct 30, 1960 Business Meeting, elected officers, “same as last year, unanimous vote.” Heating of church was discussed, Bro. Emil Mazanec will take care of the Sanctuary, same as last year. 3 small stoves will be installed in the S. S. classrooms.

Nov 6, 1960 Brother Ray Jones , from Belmont College, preached, met with the Deacons and 22 Jan 1961 he accepted the call to preach. Amount the church could pay $100. a month . He accepted . He was ordained as Pastor 16 April 1961 at his church, Prospect Baptist in Fayetteville, TN. 12 members of our church attended. April 30, 1961 Brother Jones applied for membership to our church, moving his membership from Prospect Baptist. June 25, 1961 Donna Morehead, now wife of Pastor Jones, presented herself for membership, requesting that her membership be moved from Maplewood Baptist Church. 

April 2, 1961 Robert Burysek presented himself for membership and asked that his letter be moved from membership at Gilead Baptist Church in Detroit Michigan.

June 25, 1961 Revival Report July 30-Aug 6th Evangelist Rev. Billy Cooper of Columbia, 5 person accepted Christ: Mrs. Walter Prohaska, Mrs. Peggy Keen, Charlene McGee, Jessica Glover, Vickie Stewart. Baptism was held Sunday afternoon Aug. 13th 1961 at Portland Baptist Church.

August 27, 1961 Eugene Prohaska presented himself for membership with our church,....... accepted Christ as his personal savior and was accepted for membership with full fellowship after baptism.

Sept 24, 1961 Business Meeting Officers agreed and elected to serve another year. Also Bro. Robert Burysek to teach a class of young folks. Bro. Joe Prohaska brought up our contributions for missions (15% monthly). S. S. Voted to “still send Bro. Charle Bohotec $10. a month for awhile.”

Feb 4, 1962 & Feb 11, 1964 Deacons nominated and accepted Frank Wosta and Charlie McGee. Vacancy of church offices of clerk ,song leader and Mens’ Bible class teacher left vacant by the passing of Bro Edw. Ertner. Nominations were as follows (and elected Feb 18)Clerk : Joe Prohaska , Song Leader: Wesley Burysek, Teacher of Mens’ Bible class: Robert Burysek Deacon: Charlie McGee.

April 8, 1962 Business Meeting. Missions work discussed. Plans for Revival set Aug. 5-12 and Vacation Bible School will be June 25-29. Robert Burysek to see about getting a larger sign on the highway.

May 20, 1962 Business Meeting regarding someone to clean and care for the church. Emile Mazanec nominated and accepted. Voted to pay $10. per month. Joe Prohaska appointed to see about getting the church roof painted.

Sept 16, 1962 Business Meeting. All officers from previous year willing to serve and approved in the same office for next year.

Oct 28, 1962 Meeting to discuss Pastors salary. Recommended by the deacons that the pastors’ salary be raised $5. per week. Motion made and carried.

17 January 1964 - Ordination of Rev. Ernest Hamilton, student of Belmont College Nashville, TN at Immanuel Baptist Church. He has served as Pastor here since last May. Rev. Ray Jones, past pastor, now Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Franklin, KY. served as moderator in the absence of Rev. Nat McKinney, Jr. Pastors present: Rev. Bill Webb (Mitchellville Baptist), Rev. Raymond Napier Jr. (Pleasant Hill), Rev. Edwin Alexander (Mallory Heights Baptist, Memphis-home church of Ernest Hamilton), Rev. James Binkley (Southside), Deacons of Immanuel Baptist, Robert Burysek and Joe Prohaska, James Holubicka presented Rev. Hamilton with a bible. Special music was by Rev. And Mrs. David Jicka. (Barbs Baptist Church, Franklin Ky).

Nov. 10, 1963 A short business meeting was held in regard to buying 12 new song books. (Motion read, seconded and carried). Another motion made to raise the Pastors salary by $5.00 a week, the motion seconded and carried.

March 1, 1964 Pastor Ray Jones presented his resignation, effective April 1, 1964. Last sermon to be preached March 29. He has accepted the pastorate at Calvary Baptist Church in Franklin, KY.

May 3, 1964 Deacons met with Rev. Ernest Hamilton (who has been guest speaker 3 times since we have been without a pastor). Inquiry was made as to his availability and his interest in serving as pastor. Matter brought before the church May 17, motion made and unanimously carried to call Rev. Hamilton as Pastor. He accepted and assumed duties the following Sunday (May 24,1964.)

July 5, 1964 Meeting to discuss Revival Meeting. Date set for August 16-23. Song Leader for Revival: Bill Cates of Nashville.

Jan. 31, 1965 Meeting held to discuss remodeling of the church auditorium .Committee composed of Joe Prohaska, Jim Holubicka, Bobby Morris. Reports given on two estimates. Fred Pedigo gave cost estimates (lowest costs $1500.) as to replacing ceiling , walls and hardwood floors (including painting and finishing floor). Motion made & carried to accept Mr. Pedigo’s offer. Payment plan then discussed, and decided to take love offerings & pledges for the amount, if that is not enough money, then the rest should be taken out of the church treasury.

Jan. 1963 Pastor Jones called a meeting to nominate deacons. Those names for consideration: Robert Burysek; Frank Wosta. Robert Burysek elected & agreed to serve.

March 1963 Meeting for planning of Easter Revival. Date set for April 18-21.

March 24, 1963 (Sunday). Ordination of Deacons at 2:30 p.m. Deacons ordained: Jim Holubicka, Robert Burysek, Joe Prohaska. Wesley Burysek had charge of the music. Rev. Ray Jones led prayer and welcomed visitors. Ordination Service was led by Rev. John Tullack. The laying on of hands followed. The hand of fellowship was given the new deacons. Benediction was given by Billy Austin.

April 28, 1963 Business meeting. The minutes were read. Rose Nesvarba gave mission fund report and reported a balance of $171.00 in the fund. Mrs. Betty Holubicka gave the fellowship fund report - having a balance of $23.78. Pastor Jones read a thank you note from the Keen family. Deacons made a recommendation that the church join the Southern Baptist Convention. Discussion followed and a motion made and carried to table the recommendation until the next meeting. The following Sunday Mrs. Lillie McGee gave the Treasurers report ($780.15 in fund).

August 4, 1963 Business Meeting called to resolve discussion about the Southern Baptist Convention.

Motion made and seconded for church to join the Bledsoe Baptist Association and Southern Baptist Convention. Vote taken and motion carried.

Sept. 8, 1963 Business Meeting called to discuss Bledsoe Baptist Assoc. Meeting in Sept 11 & 12. And to appoint messengers to represent our church at the meeting. Those appointed were: Pastor & Mrs. Ray Jones, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Prohaska.

Oct. 13, 1963 Semi Annual Business meeting. Pastor Ray Jones read the list of those added to the church since the last business meeting. Jan. 19, 1964 Deacons meeting to appoint someone to be on executive board with the Pastor, Jim Holubicka appointed and accepted by the church.

March 1, 1964 Pastor Ray Jones tendered his resignation effective April 1, so that he might accept the Pastorship at Calvary Baptist Mission in Franklin, Ky. The church voted to accept his resignation March 15.

May 3, 1964 Deacons Meeting. Guest Speaker Rev. Ernest Hamilton, who has preached here 3 times, asked to be pastor by the church and he said he would if called. May 17th. The church voted unanimously to call him as pastor. He assumed his duties Sunday May 24th.

June 7, 1964 Deacons Meeting to discuss Vacation Bible School, it was decided to leave it up to the women, with the date to be set later.

July 5, 1964 Deacons Meeting to discuss Revival with Pastor Hamilton. Date set for August 23-30 with Bro. Hamilton to be the evangelist and he agreed to get someone to lead the singing. The date was later changed to Aug.16-23. Song Leader was Bill Cates of Nashville.

Aug. 2, 1964 Deacons meeting. No new business.

Sept. 27, 1964 Business Meeting to appoint messengers to the Bledsoe Baptist Association meeting to be held at New Hope Church Oct. 21 & Mitchellville Church Oct. 22. Those appointed: Bro. The motion was made and carried that the slate of officers & teachers be accepted.

Dec. 6, 1964 Business Meeting, to discuss missions. The church voted to raise the amount given to the co-operative program from 5% to 10%, and the 2% given to the association raised to 5%. The Deacons made a motion for the church to grant a ministers’ license to Johnny Hamilton. After hearing his testimony the church voted unanimously to grant him a license. Plans were also discussed regarding the ordination of Bro. Ernest Hamilton and the date set for Jan 17.

Jan. 3, 1965 Deacons Meeting. Discussion to raise the church caretaker’s salary from $5.00 To $7.00, and it was decided to do so. Other items of business included the purchase of new song books and having the piano tuned. The deacons & Pastor agreed that this should be taken care of. Mrs. Charlie Nesvarba was appointed to see about getting the piano tuned. Bro. Hamilton was appointed to get the hymnals. Jim Holubicka and Joe Prohaska were appointed to see about having a new floor put in the auditorium.

Jan. 17, 1965 3 p.m. Ordination of Bro. Ernest Hamilton at Immanuel Baptist Church. Moderator Rev. Ray Jones. Br. Bill Webb read scripture & ended in prayer. Robert Burysek introduced the candidate. Questioning done by Rev. Raymond Napier, Jr. Sermon was delivered by Rev. Edwin Alexander. Bro. Jones Brinkley delivered the charge to the candidate and the church. Ordination prayer led by Joe Prohaska. Jim Holubicka presented Bro. Hamilton with a bible on behalf of the church. Special music was presented by Bro. & Mrs. David Jicka of Franklin, Ky. The service was well attended.

Jan. 31, 1965 Business Meeting held to discuss remodeling of the church auditorium. A committee composed of Jim Holubicka, Joe Prohaska, Bobby Morris had seen two building contractors, discussed the matter and took bids. The lowest cost submitted was by Fred Pedigo, included a new ceiling, walls & hardwood floor (also painting and finishing the floor). For approx. $1500.00. Motion made and carried to start as soon as possible. It was decided to pay for the remodeling with love offering and pledges and if that plan fails to bring in enough money, to pay for it out of the church treasury.

April 4, 1965 Deacons Meeting to discuss having a light put on the church grounds. Joe Prohaska appointed to get it done. Then discussion was brought up about purchasing a Communion Table. Bobby Morris was appointed to see about it.

June 6, 1965 Deacons met to plan a weekend revival. Pastor Hamilton suggested that we contact Rev. Richard Mazanec and ask him to be the guest speaker. Date set for July 9-11. Homecoming was held on Sunday, the closing day of Revival and dinner was served on the grounds.

Aug. 1, 1965 Deacons met to plan a fall revival. Rev. Hamilton asked Pastor Raymond Napier, Jr. to preach the revival services (he accepted). Date was set for Oct. 4-10 .

Aug. 8, 1965 Business Meeting to discuss the matter of paying a portion of the Pastors rent. Recommendation made and after discussion, motion made & carried that the church pay half the rent.

Sept. 12, 1965 Nominating committee of Mrs. Ernest Hamilton, Charlie McGee, Robert Burysek was appointed by the pastor to get a slate of officers and teachers for the new church year and present to the church for approval .

Sept. 19, 1965 Meeting called to decide what to do with the old piano. A new one given to the church by Reuben Nesvarba in memory of his wife Emma, was delivered a few days ago, and the dealer offered to buy the old one. After some discussion, the church agreed to sell the old one to the dealer.

Sept. 26, 1965 Business Meeting to appoint messengers to the Bledsoe Association meeting Oct. 20-21. Appointed were Frank Wosta, Mrs. Joe Mazanec and Mrs. Jim Holubicka. Charlie Nesvarba was appointed as alternate.

Oct. 24, 1965 Annual Business Meeting. Rev. Ernest Hamiton presided. Officers read reports and were approved as read. Recommendations from the deacons were as follows: 1. To combine the Sunday School Treasury and Regulary Church Treasury into one General treasury. 2. To give all mission gifts through the Cooperative Program. 3. To designate every 5th Sunday as offering for the building fund. After some discussion, the motion was made and carried to accept these recommendations. Church Budget for 1965-6 was presented, discussed and voted on. Mrs. James Renfro elected as church custodian. Another matter discussed briefly was helping the Czech people in their mission work. A committee composed of Charlie McGee, Robert Burysek and Rose Nesvarba was appointed to research this, and to take an offering twice a year to support it. The nominating committee presented their slate of officers and teachers for the new church year, as follows:

June 12, 1966 Business Meeting called to discuss the matter of giving a love offering to Bro. McKinney. The church voted to give an offering of $10.00.

Aug. 28, 1966 Pastor Hamiton appointed a nominating committee of Bobby Morris, Mrs. Charlie McGee and Mrs. Joe Prohaska to get a slate of officers and teachers for the new church year.
