This indenture made this 14th day of November one thousand eight hundred & twenty nine between William Hughes of the County of Sumner & State of Tennessee of the one part and Samuel Chappell, Thomas Hughes & Charles Morgan of the 2nd part, & Humphrey Bate of the 3rd part. Witnesseth said William Hughes in order to secure the said Chappell, Hughes, & Morgan from the payment of a note given to Caty Scurry by said William Hughes and said Chappell, Hughes, & Morgan his securities for one hundred and thirty five dollars due the 10th October 1830, And in the further sum of one dollar in consideration to the said William Hughes him hand paid by the said Humphrey Bate at or before the ensealing or delivering of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said William Hughes hath granted & sold & by these presents do grant bargain & sell unto the said H. Bate that tract of land where on he now lives adjoining the lands of Sarah Tylar and others contains 41 acres be the same more or less with all the crop now growing on it, 1 cart & steers, 4 head of horses, 17 head of sheep, 24 head of hogs, 4 beds & furniture, and one cherry cupboard upon Trust, nevertheless that the said H. Bate shall at anytime after - if the aforesaid money is not paid said proceed to advertise said land and property by giving notice at four public places in Sumner County ten days & sell the said land & property to the highest bidder for ready money for the best price that can be had & out of the money arising from such sale to pay out & satisfy in the 1st place all cost & charges arising under this Deed from the said sale & then the debt & interest and the residue if any to the use of said William Hughes his heirs or assigns. In witness whereof the parties have hereunto set their hands & seals this day & date first written. Signed sealed & acknowledged in the presence of us.

State of Tennessee, Sumner County Court November Term 1829

Deed of Trust from William Hughes to Humphrey Bate Trustee &C of horses, seventeen head of sheep, twenty four head of hogs, & sundry articles of household furniture was duly acknowledged in open Court by the said Hughes & ordered to be certified for registration.
