Saddler, W. W. To Alfred Groves - Deed of Trust

I have this day bargained and sold and do hereby sell and transfer unto Alfred Groves and his heirs forever for the consideration of five dollars and the considerations hereafter mentioned the following described tract of land containing forty acres upon which I now reside and lying in Sumner Cty. Tenn. Distc. No. 19 and bounded on the East by Eliza Jenkins on the South by Sanford Bernard on the West by George Tyree and on the North by Isaac and James Thompson also one buggy .  I warrant the title of the above property to the said Groves and his heirs and assigns forever.  But this Deed is made for the uses and trusts and no other that is to say I am indebted to Alfred Groves in the sum of one hundred dollars or __________ note and account, to Lucas & Jernigan in the sum of $35.00 cts. to Leon Miller the sum of $35.00 cts. to W. Lovell & Co. the sum of $30 and to Mason & Lovell the sum of $15.00 cts. and I am desirous of paying and securing the said debts and if I shall pay off and satisfy the said debts on or before the first day of October 1861 then this conveyance to be null and void otherwise to remain in full force and effect.  And if not so paid then I direct my said Trustee Alfred Groves to advertise said property according to law and sell the same for cash the land to be sold without my right of redemption to be reserved.  And after the payment of the cash of said trust I direct my said Trustee to pay going to him first and then pay off all the other said debts and if there is anything left to pay the same to me.  In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal October 11th 1860.

Erwin, G. L. To Andrews & Co. - Bill of Sale

I  George L. Erwin have this day bargained and sold to Andrews & Co. of Hartsville Tennessee for the consideration of one hundred and twenty five dollars to me in hand paid the receipt and payment which is hereby acknowledged my present crop of tobacco estimated to be ten thousand plants be the same more or less.  I obligate myself to finish cultivating cutting housing curing stripping the same and deliver it at Harts ferry by the 1st April 1861.  Given under my hand this July 7th 1860.

Litten, Isaac from Blythe & Yates - Bill of Sale

Received of Isaac Litten Trustee for Mrs. Almira E. Glover nine hundred and fifty dollars in full for a negro woman named Julia about thirty years old of black complexion. We warrant the title to said negro Woman and further warrant her to be sound sensible healthy and a slave for life.  Witness our hands this 7th day of July A. D. 1860.

I Wm. P. Moore of the above county and State have this day bargained and sold to R. D. Moore of the above county & State my three Jennetts Black Princess Lady Washington and Florence and their increase for and in consideration of one thousand dollars in his note due twelve months from this date.  The conditions of this trade are as follows.  I the sd. Wm P. Moore am to keep the Jennets and their increase well for twelve months and pay due attention to the breeding of the same to the best Jacks in the country and that the Jennetts and their increase are to stand as collateral security for the payment of the purchase money.  Given under my hand and seal This Octr. 10th 1860.

Kirkpatrick, Hugh Snr. & Nancy Grizzard - Agreement

This article of agreement made & entered into this the 12th day of October 1860 by and between Hugh Kirkpatrick Senr. of the county of Sumner and Nancy Grizzard of the county of Davidson & all of the State of Tennessee Witnesseth that the said Hugh Kirkpatrick & Nancy Grizzard have it in contemplation to intermarry & have agreed to marry in a short time and in view of that event & in consideration thereof have agreed to certain settlements of their property and rights of property mutually as follows to wit. The said Nancy is to retain all her estate of every kind & all her rights of property just as she now does free from all claims thereto by the said Hugh his heirs executors etc. and the said Hugh doth hereby in consideration of said marriage renounce & relinquish to the said Nancy forever all his marital rights to her estate and to claim nothing thereof either for himself his heirs executors etc..  And the said Hugh doth also convey unto her the said Nancy five hundred dollars in cash a lot of two acres of ground in Goodletsville adjoining the Depot ground which is unimproved - one horse & buggy worth one hundred dollars one cow & calf one bedstead & furniture & one beauro.  But the said five hundred dollars is not to be paid to the said Nancy nor the said lot of ground & other property to belong to her only in the event she survives the said Hugh & in such event & then only

the same is to be paid over to her out of his estate & conveyance of the property to be absolute and in the event said Nancy should die before the said Hugh then this conveyance of money & other property by him to her to be void & of no effect, but the same is to revert to him and they will in the event of her death before the said Hugh be entitled to no part of his estate whatever and she the said Nancy on her part doth for herself her heirs executors etc. renounce to the said Hugh in consideration of void marriage all claim or interest in his estate of every kind & in any event except the said five hundred dollars the said lot of ground & other property described with the conditions annexed thereunto.

Carpenter, Chas. A. To A. J. Swaney - Deed of Trust

Know all men by these presents that I Charles A. Carpenter in consideration of five dollars paid by A. J. Swaney have this day bargained and sold one sorrel filly, one year old last spring, and hereby convey the said filly to said Swaney.  The above conveyance is made for the following uses & trusts and none others that is to say.  Whereas Thompson & Co. hae obtained a judgement before Esqr. F. G. Haynes for about fifty dollars and the said A. J. Swaney has become my stay security.  Now if I should pay said judgement when the stay expires which will be about the last of January 1861 then this conveyance is to be void otherwise said A. J. Swaney after giving ten days notice at two public places in Sumner County shall expose to public sale the said sorrel filly for cash to the highest bidder and after paying said judgement & costs shall pay the balance to me. In testimony whereof I have this day affixed my hand seal this the 11th Octr 1860.

Carpenter, Chas. A. To A. J. Swaney - Deed of Trust

Know all men by these presents that I Charles A. Carpenter in consideration of five dollars to me paid by A. J. Swaney have this day bargained & sold and hereby convey to sd. Swaney one sorrel mare ____ years old.  The above conveyance is made for the following uses and trusts & none other that is to say whereas I am indebted to Mentlo & Swaney by account of eighty dollars for medical services and desire to secure the said Mentlo & Swaney for their services.  Now if I shall pay said Mentlo & Swaney eighty dollars by the 1st day of October eighteen hundred and sixty one then this conveyance is to void.  Otherwise the said A. J. Swaney after giving ten days notice at 2 public places in Sumner County shall expose to public sale for cash to the highest bidder the said sorrel mare and after paying the eighty dollars to Mentlo & Swaney shall pay the balance to me.  In testimony whereof I have this day affixed my hand and seal this Octr. 11th 1860.

Moore, Wm. P. To John Groves - Mortgage

Whereas I Wm. P. Moore of the above county and State have this day bargained and sold unto John Goves of the county & State aforesaid a certain negro boy named Bradford of Dark complexion for and in consideration of five hundred & twenty five dollars to me duly paid the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge.  But the consideration of the above Bill of Sale is such - Whereas the said John Groves is my security in the sum of five hundred and twenty five dollars but if I should pay the said surety debt within eighteen months then the above Bill of Sale to be void.  Otherwise to remain in full force and virtue This Octr. 13th 1860.

Archer, S. & J. C. To J. W. Franklin

For and in consideration of the natural love & affection which we Stevenson Archer and Jane C. Archer wife of said Stevenson bear & entertain for & towards our uncle John W. Franklin of Sumner County state of Tennessee and the further consideration of one dollar to us paid, We have given granted & do hereby convey and transfer to the said John W. Franklin a negro woman named Leanna Jenning aged about thirty five years of black complexion & her two children Annette aged about seven years and Laura aged about five years both of copper complexion.  To have and to hold the same as slaves to the said John W. Franklin his heirs and assigns forever.  We agree to warrant the title of said slaves against all claims made by through or under us but no further or otherwise. Witness our hands and seals this tenth day of October 1860.

State of Maryland, Baltimore City to wit;

On this tenth day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty personally appeared before me the subscriber Bolivar D. Danels a commissioner of the State of Tennessee in and for the State of Maryland to take the acknowledgement and probate of Deeds residing in the city of Baltimore aforesaid Stevenson Archer and Jane C. Archer his wife and did severally acknowledge the aforegoing Bill of Sale or instrument of writing to be their respective act and deed. The said Jane C. Archer signed and sealed the same out of the presence and hearing of her said husband and she being by me privately examined out of the presence and hearing of her said husband declared and said she did the same freely and voluntarily without being induced so to do by fear of or threat from her said husband or through fear of his displeasure.  In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix my official seal this tenth day of October 1860.

Worrell, Wm B. & Martha To John Worrell - Power of Attorney

We Wm. B. Worrell & wife Martha Worrell (formerly Martha Hamilton) of the county of Fayette in the State of Tennessee do hereby nominate constitute and appoint John Worrell of said county of Fayette and State of Tennessee our true & lawful Attorney in fact for us and in our names to demand & receive from Finas K. Howell, M. H. To Goodall & Co. & Others- Bill of Sale

I Munk Howell have this day bargained and sold to Goodall & Co. Andrews & Co. H. M. Neely Bennett & Stalker & Co. and D. L. Goodall & H. C. Ellis of Hartsville for the consideration of the aggregate sum of one hundred & sixty two dollars to me in hand paid by the above named persons the receipt and payment of which I hereby acknowledge, my entire crop of tobacco supposed to be three thousand lbs. be the same more or less.  Also two fat hogs and five bbl. of corn and one clock.  I obligate myself to take good care of said tobacco strip & prize and deliver the said tobacco at Harts ferry on Cumberland river by 1st April 1861 as witness my hand and seal this Octr. 16th 1860.

We Lewis & Elizabeth Grantum hereby transfer & convey to S. W. Hodges two houses & lots in Cairo whereon George Pryor & George W. Johnson now lives also one yoke of Oxen & one year old colt for the sum of five dollars to us paid .  The above conveyance is made for the following purpose to wit the said S. W. Hodges has loaned the said Lewis & Elizabeth Grantum the sum of fifty five dollars which falls due the 10th day of January 1861.  Now if said Grantums pay the above named note at maturity then the above conveyance is to be void if not said S.W. Hodges is to sell the above named property at Sarver Steam Mill to the highest bidder after giving ten days notice at three or more public places and pay said note & the balance of the proceeds pay over to said Grantums after paying all legal charges.  Given under our hands & seals this 19th day of July 1860.

Cummings, Asa To Alfred Groves - Deed of Trust

I have this day and bargained and sold & do hereby transfer & convey unto Alfred Groves & his heirs the following described property viz a town lot in town of Mitchelsville Sumner County Tennessee where the Depot is now situated and being the same upon which I now reside and being the same purchased by me of James Glass.  It is on hundred feet by two hundred feet and is the same sold by Hart & Kelly as commissioners.  I own the equitable title to the same, and it is that only that I here convey, which said conveyance is for five five dollars and the other considerations hereafter mentioned.  That is to say I am indebted to Hart & Kelley as commissioners for the second payment of said lot and I am indebted to Alfred Groves for the sum of about two hundred dollars due by note & account and am desirous of securing the said debts.  Now if I shall within two years from this date pay and settle off said debts then the obligation to be void. Otherwise to remain in full force and effect.  And I direct my said Trustee if I do not pay said debts as before stated to advertise and sell said house and lot and after paying the cost of this trust then to pay off and satisfy the debts to Hart & Kelly commissioners to said Alfred Groves.  The same to be sold for cash and the right of redemption is hereby waived by me.  And if there is anything left after paying said debts then the trustee is to pay the balance to me.  This October 22, 1860.

Know all men by these presents that I Pleasant Saunders of the County and State aforesaid have this day sold to F. G. Harris & Bro. of the county and State aforesaid my present crop of Tobacco which is now cut and in the house supposed to be about eight hundred sticks for the consideration of the sum of eighty dollars to me in hand paid the receipt and payment I hereby acknowledge.  I bind myself to strip and bulk said crop of Tobacco in good order and condition without any additional charge.  In testimony whereof I have this day set my name and affixed my seal.  This 24th Octr 1860.

Goostree, Watson To Drury Short - Bill of Sale

This indenture (taped) hereby convey to Drury Short his heirs and assigns forever for 1860 between (taped) me paid a girl slave name Jane nine years old.  I warrant the title to slave (taped).  Drury Short his heirs assigns against the lawful claims of all persons and I also warrant her to be sound healthy and sensible and a slave for life.  This 27th December 1859.

Crockett both of the county of Sumner & State of Tennessee a negro boy named Dennis of copper complexion aged about fourteen years old for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand and fifty dollars cash in hand paid to me I warrant the said negro to be sound and healthy and slave for life.  I also warrant the title of said negro against the lawful claims of all persons whatever to the said George W. I John Bernard of Sumnr County Tennessee do hereby sell & convey to William Porter of Davidson County Tennessee the following property to wit; eight negroes named as follows to wit; Julia Ann aged about twenty five years.  Mary aged about 12 years, Lugene aged about 4 years , Edmond aged about 10 years, Pleasant aged about 2 years, Mira aged about 8 years, & Wyatt aged about 3 months, John aged about 6 years.  Also all the leather in my Tanyard worth about $1400.00, all the hides in my Tanyard worth about 150.00, 1 lot of shoes & boots in my Tanyard worth about 700.00, said Tanyard is in the land in Sumner County herein after to be described.  Also 1 yoke of Oxen worth about $65.00, 8 head of cattle worth about $96.00, 5 head of Horses worth about 500.00, 1 wagon worth about 50.00, 28 head of Hogs worth about 180.00 Desk Beauro & Sideboard worth about 45.00
