RITES CONDUCTED FOR TRAIN VICTIM
Funeral services for Franklin Brown, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Brown, were conducted at his home here at 11 o'clock by the Rev. Wendell Ensor, pastor of the Portland Methodist Church of which Mr. Brown was a member. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Westmoreland. Brown died Sunday morning at 8 o'clock in a Nashville hospital of. injuries received when he was struck by a southbound L. & N. freight train. The accident occurred 125 yards north of the Portland depot at 3 o'clock Sunday morning. According to Dr. J. M. Oliver, local railroad physician, who was called to the scene, and other was (obit torn), Brown was evidently walking toward the depot when blinded by a train on the siding, and stepped in front of the southbound train. Both legs were broken, one arm severely cut, and he also suffered from head and chest injuries. The entire train evidently passed over his body after dragging him several feet. The crew of the southbound train was not aware of the accident and did not stop. A switchman from the train in the siding at the time of the accident discovered the body and immediately called for help. Brown was rushed to Nashville but never regained consciousness. He is survived by his father, who is a guard at the State Penitentiary in Nashville; his mother, (obit torn) brother, John Henry Brown.
