While some enjoyed the Christmas festivities it has been very sad to others.
Just before the old year passed away, the gentle spirit of a young
Christian wife and mother passed from this old sinful world to the joys of
that new life above where God and his angels dwell forever. The subject
of this sad memorial was born in Wilson County, Tenn., Oct. 20, 1875. She
gave her heart to God at the tender age of fifteen and joined the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church, was united in the holy bonds of wedlock with Dr. J.
W. Smart, Jan. 6, 1895. Her home was then in Trousdale County; after
the marriage she moved near Parham. She brought a church letter and
joined the Horse Shoe C. P. Church; she lived what might be fully termed
a constant member until her death, which sad event occurred Dec. 28, 1897
at 1 a. m. Her remains were laid to rest the 30th in old Friendship
Cemetery near her beautiful home. Her funeral discourse was preached
by Bro. J. H. Smith, her former pastor, from Rev. 14:13 "and I heard a voice
from heaven saying unto me, write blessed are the dead which die in the Lord
from henceforth, yea, saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labors
and their works do follow them." The church could not accomodate the
large crowd that assembled there. She was a step-mother, and she came
as near filling the mother place as it could be filled. She, like our
blessed Savior, was akin to grief having lost her mother in early girlhood.
She fully realized the sentiment of the poet when he said, "Jesus can
make a dying bed feel soft as downy pillows are." She left a kind husband
and a little darling babe that will never know a mother's love, father, one
sister, two or three brothers, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn
her death. The floral tribute was by Miss Fannie Solomon.
