Herschel Goostree
Herschel Goosetree died last Friday night, in an infirmary at Indianapolis, Ind., as a result of an operation due to a relapse of measles, age 19. His. remains were shipped here and buried at the Goostree burying grounds Monday morning June the 17th. Mr. Goostree was a modest, unassuming man and liked by all who knew him. He was recently called into service by Uncle Sam and had expected to report for duty as soon as he was able to go. The Herald extends sympathy to the loved ones in this home.
In Memorium
On Thursday evening, June 13, 1918, one of our well known Portland boys died in Indianapolis, at the City Hospital. He had measles which settled in his head. Although two operations was performed, but nothing could be done to prolong his life. He died in a few days after the last operation. He had the comfort of his brother being with him during his last hours, and saw his last smile and heard his last good , good-bye. Herschel was born Feb. 23 1908; he entered the Byrum Chapel church about one year ago. He was buried Monday morning at the family burying ground. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. H. Austin at the grave. Oh. how we mourn his loss, but God knew best and carried him home to rest, where he will join his father who died several years ago. It was so hard to part from him, but in the near future, we hope to meet him on the bright eternal shore. Weep not, dear mother, your beloved son has gone to rest with Jesus and is waiting for your coming some sweet day. 'Tis hard to break the tender cord when love. has found the heart, 'Tis hard, so hard to speak the word. We must forever part. Safe in the arms of Jesus. Safe on His gentle breast, then by His overshadowed, Sweetly the soul dost rest.
