This newspaper obituary was found in a scrapbook belonging to Lela Smart Johnson.  Lela ( born March 15, 1892, died April 15, 1989)  was the daughter of James Marion Smart and Nina Belcher.  Dr. John W. Smart was the brother of James Marion Smart.

Funeral services for Dr. John W. Smart, practicing physician in Sumner County for 58 years ere held at Walnut Grove Church near White House at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon of last week.

Dr. Smart was the oldest practicing physician in Sumner County in point of service and age.  He came here in 1833, a few years after his graduation at the medical college at the University of Tennessee.

He operated a large farm in the Cottontown section of Sumner County and was a membr of the advisory committee of the Eastern Dark-Fired Tobacco Association.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Cassie Hickerson Smart, two sons, George T. and W. D. Smart, both of Cottontown, and a daughter, Mrs. Ida Bell Smith, Nashville.

Dr. Smart was active in county agricultural affairs and was one of the early advocates of the adoption of a county agent and home demonstration agent in this section.  He was active in tobacco grower meetings and often represented Sumner County on sucr meetings.

He died in Protestant Hospital in Nashville Sunday afternoon after an illness of two weeks.  He had continued in active practice until his illness.
