Anna Lucille DINWIDDIE, age 87, of Portland, passed away January 1, 2010. She was born in Poplar Bluff, Mo., January 16, 1922, to the late Frank and Hattie Walker. She is preceded in death by her husband, John A. Dinwiddie; sons, John Franklin Dinwiddie and Fred Daryl Dinwiddie. She was a longtime resident of Portland, retired from True Temper and was a member of McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church. Lucille was an avid seamstress and quilter and had been a teacher, secretary, and along with her husband, the owner and operator of a grocery store in Nashville and Portland. Funeral service was 11 a.m., Monday, January 4, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with interment at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Julia Ann WALKER, 79, of Gallatin died on Friday, January 1, 2010 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  A native of Sumner County, she was born to the late Stephen and Emily Foote Case.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her great grandchildren, Braxton Brown, and Madison Ann Page; and ten brothers and sisters.  Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 4 from the chapel of Gallatin Funeral Home.  Entombment was in the Sumner Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.  Gallatin Funeral Home & Memory Gardens at Crestview was in charge of the arrangements.

Joe. D. CARTER, 76, of Bethpage died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Ind.  He was formerly a resident of Franklin, Ind.  He was born March 9, 1933, in Gallatin to the late John B. and Ruby Scruggs Carter.  He was retired from G. F. Furniture and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.  He enjoyed fishing and racing cars at the Speedrome.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carole Page Carter; sister, Maybelle Adams; and brothers Tommy Carter and Raymond Carter.  Graveside services were held on Sunday, Jan. 3 at Old Brush Cemetery.

Ruth Harris JERNIGAN, 83, of Portland died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.  The Sumner County native was born March 30, 1926, to the late Hugh and Nannie Roney Harris.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Jernigan.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 2 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Mildred Marie Fleming PEDIGO, 85, of Morristown, Ind., formerly of Westmoreland, died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Elcie Simmons Freeman; daughter Glenda Willis; grandson James Willis; one brother, two sisters, and three infant siblings.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 3 at the Chapel of Woodard Funeral Home in Westmoreland.  Interment was in New Zion Cemetery.

Margaret D. GRAVES, 85, of Greenwood, Ind. died on Wed., Dec. 30, 2009.  The Gallatin native was born May 15, 1924, to the late A. Bratton and Ada (Jones) Story.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  She retired from the United States Post Office and P. R. Mallory's and enjoyed knitting and quilting.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, James E. Graves.  Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 3 at Greenwood Funeral Home in Greenwood, Ind. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jerry Lynn WHITE, age 60, of Portland, passed away December 30, 2009. He was born in Sumner County on February 24, 1949.  He is preceded in death by his father, Leonard White. Funeral service was 2 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Jimmy Turner officiating. Interment is at Tom Link Cemetery.

Roger Edward McFARLIN, age 56, of Portland, passed away December 30, 2009. He was born in Simpson County, Ky., on February 12, 1953, to the late Laurance and Lillian McFarlin.  Funeral service iwas 1 p.m., Friday, January 1, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Berlin Harper officiating. Interment is at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Patrick YOUNG, 42, of Portland died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at his home.  He was born May 7, 1967, in Kokomo, Ind., to the late James Young and Julia Alice Miller-Shinn Young.  He loved the Green Bay Packers and the Tennessee Titans football teams.  Memorial services were conducted at a later date.  Robertson County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dewey M. COLE, age 67, of Bethpage, passed away December 28, 2009. He was born in Sumner County on April 23, 1942, to the late Lester and Jewell Cole. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Willene Cole; grandson, Marcus Cole; daughter-in-law, Sheila Cole; brothers, Roy and Ray Cole. Funeral service was 1 p.m., Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Terrell Summerville officiating. Interment was at Sherron Cemetery.

Eva Mae LONG, age 83, of Franklin, KY, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009, at Medical Center of Franklin, Franklin, Simpson, KY. She was born May 31, 1926, in White House, Sumner, TN. She was the daughter of Herman Lynn and Ruby (Jones) Meadows, both deceased. She was the widow of Herbert J. Long. She was a seamstress. She was preceded in death by brothers, Vernon and Elgie Meadows and sisters, Ruth Link, Joyce Cole and Helen Holt. She was a member of The Eastern Star. Religious service were at 1:00 p.m., December 31, 2009, at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Michael Andrew ELLIOTT, 19, of Smithville died on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.  He was employed by Gordon's Hardware.  He was a member of the Smithville First United Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Murray and Frances Rhinehart and James Parham.  Funeral services were held on Jan. 5 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

Jimmy Leslie BELCHER, 72, of Cottontown died on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010.  He was born in Sumner County on Sept. 9, 1937, to the late Charlie L. and Margaret Ann Henderson Belcher.  He was a member of Cherry Mound Masonic Lodge #227, a member of McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church and an avid fisherman.  Funeral services were on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church.  Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Brandon BLAKINSHIP, 39, of Portland died on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at Franklin Medical Center.  The Georgia native was born Feb. 23, 1970.  He was a carpenter.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Slackland Baptist Church in Leesburg, Ala.  Interment was in Shephard's Cemetery in Gadsden, Ala.

John REESE, 81, of Westmoreland died on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  He was retired from the Texas Boot Factory.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Thornhill and Linnie Jackson Reese; brother Herbert Reese; half sisters Ruby Reese and Lois Jackson, and half-brothers Clarence, Clyde William and Tollie Jackson and Carl Reese.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from the Chapel of Woodard Funeral Home in Westmoreland.  Interment was in Sumner Memorial Gardens.

Clifton "Cliff" R. Groves, 71, a resident of New Palestin, Ind., died on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.  He was born Jan. 3, 1939, in Portland, Tenn., and was the son of the late Harvey Lee and Vonnie Lucille (Stout) Groves.  Clifton was a graduate of Portland High School, served his country in the U. S. Army, and was retired from Consolidated Freight.  He was a 25-year member of the Local Teamsters #135.  He attended Brookeville Road Community Church.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tina Lynn Groves.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was in Groves Cemetery in Portland.

Victor Earl KEITH, 85, of Portland died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.  The Portland native was born Jan. 30, 1924, and was a longtime member of Portland Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for 30 years.  He owned and operated Portland Spur Station until he retired in 1989.  He was also a veteran of World War II.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Estelle WOODARD, 97, of Portland died on Sunday, May 9, 2010.  The Portland native was born June 17, 1912 to the late Thaddeus Granville Boren and Melissa Frances Hardin Boren.  She was a housewife.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harve Woodard.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 12, at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Frank Vernon HARRISON, 90, of Gallatin died on Sunday, May 9, 2010.  He was born in Sumner County on April 1, 1920 to the late Porter and Bessie Stinson Harrison.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Mary, Ethelene, Lucille, Loraine, Mattie, and Lillie; and brothers Ear Wilson and Garvin.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 12, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home with interment at Old Brush Cemetery.

Nancy Kerley MILLER, 88, of Portland died on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  A native of Sumner County, she was born May 3, 1922, to the late John Vernon Kerley and Minnie Jane Tibbs Kerley.  She was a graduate of Sumner County High School and Peabody College.  She taught school in Portland for a few years and spent many years working in the family business, J. E. Kerley and Sons.  She was one of the "Kerley Girls" and loved to wrap gifts and assist with bridal registers.  She was a member of Portland First Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Miller, and sisters, Dorothy Kerley, Jane Kerley, and Carolyn Deasy.  Funeral services were held on Monday, May 10, at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Ronnie Lynn BOWERS, 51, of Hermitage died on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.  The Portland native was born July 8, 1958, to the late James Donald Bowers and Ruby Estelle Law.  He was a technician at Cook's Pest Control.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 11, at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Kenneth Dean GARRETT, 80, of Portland died on Saturday, May 8, at his home.  The Sumner County native was the son of the late Jeff Garrett and Minnie Canida Garrett.  He was the owner and operator of Garrett Farms.  Funeral services were held on Monday, May 10, at the Franklin First Baptist Church.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Charles Franklin WILKERSON, age 87, of Portland, passed away January 30, 2010. He was born in Sumner County on October 10, 1922, to the late John Frank and Nancy Ray Wilkerson. Charles served in the the Navy from 1943 till 1946 and retired from the Air Force, having served during WW II, Korea, and Vietnam. Masonic service was 7 p.m., Monday. Funeral service was 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Chris Towe officiating. Interment was at Old Brush Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered at the cemetery.

Jesse Allen DIXON, of Portland, was born October 4, 1931, in Davidson County and passed away January 30, 2010. He was a graduate of DuPont High School in Nashville, Tenn., and he was a retiree of PPG Industries of Nashville. He is preceded in death by his parents, Vern Hobart Dixon and Ola Blanche (Houck) Dixon of Nashville; brothers, V.H. Dixon of Augusta, Ga., Cyril Edgar Dixon of Nashville; sisters, Wilma June Dixon of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Evelyn Blanche Dixon of Nashville; daughter, Jackie Legieza of Portland. Funeral service is 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 3, 2010, Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Taylor officiating. Interment is at Portland Memorial Gardens.

Barbara Gail CRAIG, 49, of Portland died on jan. 29, 2010 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Donnestad, Sr., and sister Patricia Donnestad.  Memorial services were held at 1 pm Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.

Melissa Rennee GRAVES, 41, of Portland died on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 at her home.  She was preceded in death by her father, Delbert Graves and sister, Mariellen Granves.  Graveside services were held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

J.C. Willard CLINARD, age 65, of Portland, passed away February 13, 2010. He was born in Robertson County on August 30, 1944, to the late Jessie and Lucille Clinard. He was a member of Liberty General Baptist Church in Franklin, Ky., past Master of Portand Masonic Lodge 326, and he was a retired plumber. Masonic service at 6 p.m., Tuesday. Funeral service is 1 p.m., Wednesday, February, 17, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. Interment is at Portland Memorial Gardens.

John CESKA, age 87, of Portland, passed away February 12, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on January 30 1923, to the late Jim and Frances Bolba Ceska. John was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country during World War II. He was an active member of American Legion Post 17 and had served as chaplain. As a member of the American Legion Honor Guard, John had attended the burial services of countless veterans, presenting flags to the next of kin, which he did so with great honor and emotion. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Ann Ceska; parents, Jim and Frances Ceska; sister, Ava Jean Suddarth. Funeral service is 1 p.m., Monday, February 15, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery. 

Clemon Buford "C. B." HUDDLESTON, 83, of Bethpage died on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2010.  He was born in Macon County on April 30, 1926, to the late Arlie Von and Sarah Jane Andrews Huddleston.  He served in the U. S. Army.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 14, at Sulphur Fork Missionary Baptist Church.  Interment was in Sulphur Fork Church Cemetery.

Jessie Lera TUCKER, age 89, of Hartsville, passed away February 10, 2010. She was born in Macon County, Tenn., on October 15, 1920, to the late James and Floretta ONeal. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thommy Tucker; sons, Larry Joe Tucker and Hillas Tucker; daughter, Carol Faye Tucker; grandson, Alvin Lee Clubbs, Jr.; granddaughter, Melissa Tucker. Funeral service is 2 p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Mary Agnes APPLEBY, age 69, of Portland, passed away February 9, 2010, at her home. She was born in Sumner County on November 9, 1940, to the late Lex and Elsie Gregory Upchurch. She is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Appleby. Funeral service was 11 a.m., Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Gladys Estelle GREGORY, age 89, of Portland, passed away February 8, 2010. She was born in Sumner County on February 7, 1921, to the late Virgil and Deborah Gant. She is preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Gregory; brothers, Roscoe, Ernest and John Gant. Funeral service is 2 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home .  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Billy Benjamin PEASE, 87, of Bethpage died on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  He was retired from the U.S. Navy and the town of Westmoreland.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Dorothy Pease, son, Timothy Pease, sister, Ruth Pease, and brother, Marshall Pease.  Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 22 at Woodard Funeral Home in Westmoreland.  Interment was in Blue Door Cemetery.

Harold Odell HARDIN, age 85, of Portland, TN, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center, Gallatin, Tenn. He was born August 22, 1924, in Portland. He served in the U.S. Navy in W.W. II, and he was an inspector for Tennaco Pipe Line. He was the son of Timothy Clinton and Leona (Wendt) Hardin, both deceased. Religious service is Sunday, February 21, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in the Hardin Cemetery.

Jerry Hugh BRADLEY, 71, of Portland died on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 at his home.  Graveside services were held on Monday, Feb. 22, at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Shirley Ann STEPHENS, 75, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Portland, died on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010.  Shirley was retired from the Elmer Hinton Library.  She is preceded in death by her husband, James Stephens, and mother, Retta Henson.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 21, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in State Line Cemetery.

Kenneth James DOUGLAS, age 82, of Portland, passed away February 18, 2010, at his residence. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on June 27, 1927, to the late George and Isabel Douglas. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; and son, Jim. He was a member of McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church. Memorial service is 3 p.m., Sunday, February 21, 2010, at McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church with Alex Jackson officiating. Graveside service is 11 a.m., Monday, February 22, 2010, at Restlawn Memory Gardens. 

Joyce Pearson WILLIAMS, 69, of Portland died on Wednesday, February 17, 2010.  She was born on July 12, 1940 and was a lifelong resident of Portland, Tenn.  She passed away after a long and brave battle with hemochromatosis and cancer. She was surrounded in death by many of those who loved her. A beloved mother, grandmother, companion, and friend, she was one of four children born to the late Earl and Winnie Pearson and was the beloved wife of the late Charlie Williams.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Joshua "Waddy" David ALLEN, 16, of Portland died on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010 at his residence.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Erica Allen.  Graveside services were held on Friday, Feb. 19, from the Sumner Memorial Gardens.

Willard Clifton CHANDLER, age 90, of Portland, passed away February 16, 2010, at his home. He is preceded in death by his parents, W.T. and Bertie Turner Chandler; sister, Ruby Cowan; brother, W.T. “Cotton” Chandler. Funeral service was 1 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Portland Memorial Gardens. 

Ricky Glen McDOWELL, age 55, of Portland, passed away February 16, 2010, at his home. He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Georgie Williams McDowell. Funeral service is 3 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with interment at Halltown Cemetery.

Eugene “Mitch” MITCHELL, “Big Pa”, age 75, of Portland, passed away February 15, 2010, at his residence. He was born in Anniston, Ala., on July 13, 1934, to the late Joseph Walter and Euna Mai Mitchell. He is preceded in death by his brother, James Mitchell; and sister, Della Robinette. Funeral service was 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. . Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Joseph Randall BROWN, 58, of Portland died on Sunday, March 7, 2010.  He was born in Sumner County on Jan. 19, 1952 to the late Buford and Lois Brown.  Randall was retired from Albany International.  Graveside services were held on Tuesday, March 9, at Fairfield Cemetery.

Donald Buford RIPPY, age 82, of Bethpage, passed away March 6, 2010. He was born in Sumner County on December 16, 1927, to the late Bert and Bertie Rippy. Funeral Service is 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Hettie Lee Perkins BRADY, 03, of Gallatin died on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.  She was a member of the Church of Christ, a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jules Brady.  Graveside services were held at Henry Cemetery in Corinth, Miss. on Saturday, March 6.

James Harvey PORTER, age 84, of Gallatin, passed away March 2, 2010. He was born in Sumner County on June 29, 1925, to the late Edward and Georgie Kemp Porter. Graveside service is 2 p.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Harold TRAMMEL, Sr., age 84, of Portland, born 1925, born again, 1937; passed away March 1, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Lula Trammel; sisters, Dorothy Sain, Lorene Dorris; brother, Raymond Trammel. Funeral service is 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

James D. BOREN, age 71, of Portland, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center, Gallatin, Tenn. He was born October 19, 1938, in Franklin, Ky. He is the son of James C. and Mae (Dyson) Boren, both deceased. He was married to Arlen (Burnett) Boren who preceded him in death. Portland Funeral Chapel. Religious service was at 12:00 noon on Monday, March 15, 2010 at Portland Funeral Chapel. Interment is at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Franklin, Ky.

Mark Alan JONES, age 43, of Portland, passed away March 10, 2010. He was born in Oakland, Calif., on July 20, 1966. Funeral service is 11 am., Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Tim Coker officiating. Interment is at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Thomas Edward GROVE, age 85, of Portland, passed away March 9, 2010. He was born in Warren County, Tenn., on September 24, 1924, to the late Charles and Bertha Grove. Gladys A. (Mammy) DUNHAM, age 93, of Portland, passed away March 21, 2010, at Caring Hearts Residential Home. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard(Dick) Dunham; daughter, Catherine Warner; grandsons, Michael Stinnett and Steven Russell. Visitation is 10 a.m., until 9 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2010, and 10 a.m., until 9 p.m., Tuesday. Funeral service is 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Chris Towe and Bro. Robert Gilman officiating. Interment is at Old Brush Cemetery.

Noah Isaac WILSON, 18, of Portland died on Saturday, March 20, 2010.  He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bud Wilson and Dennis Buttery.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 24, at Portland First Baptist Church.  Interment was at Halltown Cemetery.

Kelsie Dawn TROBAUGH, 17, of Portland died on Saturday, March 20, 2010.  She is preceded in death by grandparents, J. T. Reagan and Betty Reagan York.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 24, at Portland First Baptist Church.  Interment was at Halltown Cemetery.

Earline Lillie BROOKS, age 73, of Portland, passed away March 16, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center after a defeated battle with lung cancer. Oscar SMITH, Jr., 68, of Gallatin died on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Alive Hospice at the Skyline Madison Campus.  A Sumner County native, he was born to the late Oscar and Nina Walker Smith.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Corey Longey; sister, Jessie M. Strother; and brother, Ewing Smith.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 6, in the chapel of Gallatin Funeral Home.  Interment was in the Gallatin Memory Gardens at Crestview.

Thelma J. (Steele) LINK, age 77, of Cottontown, Tenn., passed away Sunday, May 9, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas; son, Duane; sister, Sarah Ann (Steele) Day. Thelma, a Sumner County native, lived in Ohio for 35 years and illustrated her caring and compassionate talents as a floral arranger/designer at Grove City Floral and later became a Licensed Practical Nurse for Orient State Institute, from which she retired in 1986 and returned to Cottontown with her husband. She was a member of New Deal Church of Christ as well as a loyal faithful member of Grove City Church of Christ. Her favorite pastimes reflected her love of nature and knowledge as she was an accomplished gardener, seamstress, devoted mystery novelist fan, a classic Southern cook, and she immersed herself in contemporary and country music. Her love of travel included visits to all but one the U. S. states and the several foreign countries. Thelma will be sorely missed as she was described by all who encountered her, even briefly, as a sweetheart. Her sage advise and gentle disposition and unbiding enthusiasm for helping others are a true loss for family and friends. Her forgiving nature and embracing love of family will remain as cherished memories for her survivors. Her infectious laugh should happily bring warm smiles for those who honor and remember her as a loving mother, aunt and grandmother. Funeral service is 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. She will be in everlasting peace next to her husband at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Ella TOMLINSON,  passed from this world into the presence of her Saviour on May 30, 2010. She was a selfless, devoted wife, mother and friend. Ella loved life, her family, and she enjoyed time spent with them. Ella was born in Sumner County to John and Evie (Choate) Gregory. She retired from Eaton Corp., in Gallatin, in 1984.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Tomlinson; sisters, Frances McCloud, Mary Jane Matthew and Hilda Creasy. Virginia LADD, age 72, of Portland, passed away May 28, 2010, at her residence. She was born in Macon County on August 12, 1937, to the late Joy Bueluis and Maggie Perry Jenkins. Mary Taylor WHITE, 82, of Portland died on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  She was born in Sumner County on Feb. 14, 1928, to the late Harvey and Ruby Canida Taylor.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Lindsley, and a brother, Raymond Taylor.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Freewill Baptist Church.  Interment was in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Alfred Ray HODGES, 72, formerly of Portland, died on Monday, May 24, 2010.  He was born Oct. 11, 1937, to the late Raymond and Marguerite Hodges.  He was a member of Al Menah Shrine Flying Feezes and Nashville Quiet Birdman.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Joyce Hodges, and brother Leon C. Hodges.  Graveside services were held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Portland at 2 pm, June 5.

Roy Hart GIVENS, age 76, of Portland, passed away May 27, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. He was born in Smith County on January 24, 1934, to Jasper and Nellie Givens. Roy retired from Freudenberg Non Wovens at Old Hickory. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Wakefield Givens; parents, Jasper and Nellie Givens; sister, Reba Lee; brothers, Edward, Erby and Willie Givens. Funeral service was at 3 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Portland Memorial Gardens.

Damon NEAL, 23, of Portland died on Tuesday, May 25, 2010.  He was a Portland native.  He had served four years in the United States Army with two tours of duty in Iraq and was presently serving in the National Guard.  Funeral services were held on Friday, May 28, at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery.  Full military honors were provided by the Army National Guard.

Elizabeth BOWMAN, 60, of Elkton died on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Vanderbilt Medical Center.  She was born Nov. 26, 1949, in Millersburg, Ohio, to Katie Ann Miller Troyer and the late Dan E. Troyer.  She had been a school teacher at Boontown Parochial School and Pennyrile Christian Academy.  She was a membr of the Todd County Ladies Club.  She graduated from International Bible College in 1980.  Services were held Sunday, May 30, at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton, Ky.  Burial followed in the Bowman-Brown Cemetery in Ridgetop.

May Rogers MOONEYHAN, age 57, of Cottontown, passed away June 12, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. She was born in Sumner County on January 6, 1953. Hallie B. BREWER, 84, of Portland died Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  She was born in Sumner County on March 15, 1926.  Hallie was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Widdie Brackin Brewer, brothers Carl and Charles Brewer; and sister Ruth Bratton.  Funeral services were held Monday, June 14, at New Hope Church.  Interment was in the New Hope Church Cemetery.

Floyd Raymond UTLEY, age 44, of Portland passed away June 6, 2010, at the Medical Center at Franklin, Ky. He was born in Sumner County on September 22, 1965, to the late Lewis Truman and Vivian Riggsbee Utley. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Wesley Utley. Graveside service was at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Searcy Cemetery.

BENJAMIN, 67, of Portland died on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at her residence.  The New York native was born May 15, 1943 to the late Albert Taber and Ann Brazo Taber.  She was the co-owner of Benjamin Automotive.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Benjamin.  A celebration of life service will be held from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday, June 26 at 242 Wilson Road in Portland.

Barbara Ann Vincent PITTS, 65, of Franklin, Ky., died on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green, Ky.  A native of Jefferson County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late E. E. "Buck" Vincent and Lois Briley Vincent.  She was a 1963 graduate of Senecca High School in Louisville, Ky. and a member of the Eastern Star.  She was an employee of the Drackett Co. for 18 years and was an emergency room clerk at the Medical Center in Franklin, Ky.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 19, at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was in the Woodburn Cemetery.

Annabel SIMPSON, age 93, of Portland, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Highland Manor Nursing Home in Portland. She was born October 28, 1916, in Oak Grove, Tenn. She was a laborer. She was married to Walden Simpson, deceased. She is the daughter of Neely and Sarah (Cantrell) Lee, both deceased. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; sons, Ronnie and Gerald Simpson; three brothers; three sisters. Funeral service is 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Portland Funeral Chapel . Interment was in Sherron Cemetery.

Margaret Cummings SNIDER, age 83 of Franklin, KY., entered into rest Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 10:30 P. M. at the Medical Center in Franklin, KY. A native of Sumner Co., TN. she was the daughter of the late Rufus Cummings and the late Allene Traughber Cummings. She was born July 26, 1926.  She was preceded in death by a sister Marie Stinson.  Mrs. Snider was a member of the Franklin First Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher for many years, she graduated from Draughon’s Business College in 1945 and worked as a bookkeeper at Kerley’s in Portland until her marriage in 1947. Margaret taught piano lessons in her home and area schools from 1955 - 1976 and served as a church pianist, organist, and choir member from the age of 13. Mrs. Snider also pursued her interest in local history and genealogy, researching and assisting in writing and publishing two books cataloging cemeteries in Sumner County and Simpson County as well as working to restore and preserve the Maple Hill Cemetery in Portland. She was a member of the History Subcommittee which researched the history of the First Baptist Church for its sesquicentennial celebration. She served as regent and historian for the Simpson County DAR Chapter and past president of the Simpson County Historical Society and also was instrumental in the restoration of the old jail which now houses the Simpson County Archives. She received the Kentucky Historian of the year award from the Kentucky Historical Society and was named a Kentucky Colonel.  Funeral services were held Thursday, June 17, at the Booker-Gilbert Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial followed in the Joseph Ewing Meguair Cemetery in Simpson County, Ky.  *We are forever grateful for her work on the Sumner and Simpson County Cemetery Books as well as her dedication to the Simpson County Archives and help she offerred all researchers.

Irene HODGES, 95, of Portland died on Tuesday, June 22, 2010.  Irene became a member of the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in 1930 and had remained a loyal member over the past 80 years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Guthrie Hodges; children, Eunice Price and Leroy Hodges.  Funeral service was held at 11 am on Friday, June 25, at Pleasant Hill Millionary Baptist Church.  Interment was in the church cemetery.  Wilkinson & Wiseman was in charge.

Earl Odell ENGLAND, Jr., age 70, of Portland, passed away July 8, 2010. He was born in Sumner County on July 18, 1939. Earl was a heavy equipment operator and a member of Labor Union and Operating Engineer Union Locals 386 and 369, and a member of the Portland Masonic Lodge. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Prock England; parents, Earl Odell England, Sr., and Pauline England; brother, Billy Ray England.  Funeral service is 2 p.m., Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Bobby Reynolds and Bobby Leon Thompson officiating. Interment is at Restlawn Memory Gardens. A Masonic service will be at the cemetery.

Paul Douglas FREEMAN, 85, of Portland died on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Alive Hospice in Madison after a courageous battle with cancer.  He was born June 6, 1925, in Macon County to the late Willie Odell and Allene Carter Freeman.  He was a graduate of Sumner County High School and a lifelong dairy and crop farmer and was known as a local seed and fertilizer supplier for many years, as well as a producer and buyer in the strawberry business.  He was a member of the Mitchellville General Baptist Church, founding director of what is now Volunteer State Bank and served multiple terms on committees of the Farm Service Agency.  He was a former board memeber and stockholder of United Farm Supply of Portland and an active board member of Sumner County Farm Bureau.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 8 at Mitchellville Baptist Church (Blue Door).  Burial was in the Mitchellville Church Cemetery. 

Bobby Rex LAWRENCE, Jr., age 49, of Portland, passed away Monday, July 12, 2010, at his home. He was born July 29, 1960, in Smyrna, Tenn. He was married to Kristal (O'Saile) Lawrence. He was a truck driver. He was the son of Bobby Rex Lawrence, Sr., and Betty Lucille (Smith) Lawrence, both of whom have preceded him in death. The family has chosen cremation.

Scott Allen POWELL, 48, of Portland died on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at his residence.  The Indiana native was born May 27, 1962, to the late Darl L. Powell and Julia Didson Smithee.  He was employed as a builder.  He served in the Army as an E-1.  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Audrey Gordon, and brothers, Darl Powell, Jr. and Donnie Powell.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Veterans Cemetery in Nashville.

WEST, 86, of Portland died on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Skyline Medical Center.  The Franklin, Ky. native was born May 27, 1924 to the late James Ellis West and Ora Dawson West.  He was a mail carrier with the United States Post Office.  Mr. West was a veteran of the United States Army and saw combat during World War II.  He served with General Patton in Europe with the 3rd Army and 4th Armored Division and the 37th Tank Battalion.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Cage West; son Randy West, brother Robert West, and sister Betty Wilkinson.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 25 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Linda Sue Bradley PORTER, 54, of Portland died on Monday, July 19, 2010 at the Medical Center in Franklin, Ky.  A native of Floyd County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Sal Bradley and Liza Hall Stephens of Portland.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Liberty Free Will Baptist Church.  Graveside services were held on Tuesday, July 20 at Felts Cemetery in Logan County, Ky.  Booker-Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

"Bill" CARTER, of Indianapolis, Ind. died on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010.  He was born in Sumner County on July 13, 1931 to the late John B. and Ruby Scruggs Carter.  Bill was a self employed auto mechanic and had owned various service stations around the city, most notably "Carter's Marathon" at Woodruff Place.  He was retired from Sears Roebuck & Co. and was a member of One Way Christian Church in Beech Grove, Ind.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral fHome with interment in Old Brush Cemetery.

Irene Cothron CARUTHERS, age 89, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at Maury Regional Medical Center. She was born February 19, 1921, in Lafayette, Tenn. She is the daughter of Wiseman Franklin and Lillie Mae (West) Cothron, both deceased. She was a store manager. She was married to James H. Curthers, who preceded her in death. James Thomas PIRTLE, 45, of Portland died on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010 at the North Crest Medical Center in Springfield.  The Simpson County, Ky., native was the son of the late A. K. Pirtle, Jr. and Bonnie Carter Pirtle.  He was a construction superintendent with TMS Contractors in Clarksville.  He was a member of the Blackjack Baptist Church.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Damon Neal, and daughter, Erin Lindsey Hullett Pirtle Woodard.  A memorial service was held at 5 pm at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.

James David BUTT, 63, of Franklin, Ky. died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010 at his residence.  The Franklin, Ky. native was the son of the late Walter Maynard Butt and Evelyn Mable Holloway Butt.  He was a superintendent of the Waste and Water Treatment Facility for 18 years, employed by the City of Franklin, Ky.  He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving with the United States Air Force.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past board member of the Renaissance, currently serving as a member of the Franklin-Simpson County Vietnam Veterans.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Britt Caldwell.  Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 8, at First United Methodist Church in Franklin.  Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Simpson County Honor Guard.

Dorthy Boyd JOHNSON, 79, of Bowling Green, Ky., died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010 at the Medco Center of Franklin, Ky.  A native of Franklin, she was one of 11 children born to the late Prince Vineyard Ausbrooks and the late Ruth Angela Ausbrooks.  She was the former owner of Boyd Upholstery and a member of the Mitchellville Church of Christ.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Johnson, and a son, Billy R. Gayle Blackburn HODGES, 49, of Franklin, Ky., died on Friday, October 15, 2010 at Hospice of Southern Kentucky.  She was born Jan. 16, 1961 to the late Burton and Cora Lovelle Roach Blackburn.  She was also preceded in death by a sister Lisa Bunae Blackburn, and two grandchildren, Megan Jewell Woodall and Timothy Lynn Owens.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 17, at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in White House.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

James Foster "Jimmie" NEAL died Thursday night, Oct. 21, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville following complications from esophageal cancer.  He had been in the hospital for two days.  Neal's passing was noted from as far away as Los Angeles on Friday as Americans paused to remember the lawyer that sent Jimmy Hoffa to prison and prosecuted the Nixon Watergate crimes.  He also was involved in many other high-profile cases since, including representing Exxon in the Valdez lawsuit stemming from the castastrophic oil spill in Alaka.  He also was involved in several high-profile cases including representing Elvis Presley's physician, George Nichopoulos; representing Ford in the Pinto explosion case, and Al Gore when Gore was questioned about his 1996 campaign fundraising.  Neal was born Sept. 7, 1929 in Oak Grove in Sumner County where he was raised on a farm.  He attended Sumner County High School in Portland where he was treasurer of his 1946 class.  Known as "Flash" on the football field, Neal played under former Coach Watt Hardison.  He played football at the University of Wyoming.  Neal served in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from the University of Wyoming.  He then attended Vanderbilt University School of Law and graduated first in his class.

Lois Idell McGuffie STAGNER, 86, of Portland lost her battle with heart disesase and diabetes on Nov. 24, 2010 at Gallatin Health Care.  She was born on March 31, 1924, at Warren County, Ky.  Elder Joe McGuffie and Bessie Jewell Perdue McGuffie, preceded her in death.  She was a retired seamstress of Portland Manufacturing Company.  She was saved in August, 1935 at Rocky Mound Missionary Baptist Church during a day service and was baptized one year later by Elder N. W. Dorris; sisters, Mary Dean McGuffie and Vonnie McGuffie Poole; brothers, G. L. McGuffie, J. L. Mcguffie, and J. R. McGuffie; and stepmother Francis McGuffie.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 28, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Dorothy Mai GREENE, 82, of Portland died on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  The Nashville native was born Nov. 22, 1928 to the late Tandy Lewis Jones and Ovie Josephine Young Jones.  She was a housewife and a babysitter.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Aaron Greene, and a grandson, William Gary Greene.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 27, at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Alton Otis NICHOLS, 80, of Franklin, Ky., formerly of Scottsville, Ky, died on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010 at the Medical Center in Franklin, Ky.  The Barren County native was the son of the late Luther Ellis Nichols and Lillian Elizabeth Carter Nichols and the husband of the late Marjorie Lula Jane Brownfield Nichols.  He was a former employee of woodwork of Mid-America and a veteran of the United States Air Force who saw combat in the Korean conflict.  He was a member of Shady Grove General Baptist Church.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 27, at Goad Funeral Home in Scottsville.  Burial ws in Cave City Cemetery.

Barbara Louise Enders CRUNK, 93, died on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010.  She was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Portland.  She most recently resided at NHC in Springfield.  She was a lifetime member of the McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Lassie Enders; husband Forrest Crunk; son Billy Crunk; and sister, Rebecca Enders Lane.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Mattie GIVENS, 86, of Portland died on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Westmoreland Care & Rehab Center where she had resided since May 15, 2009.  She was born Mattie Ruth Ballou in Dixon Springs on June 15, 1924 and was one of six children of the late Robert Lee "Dick" and Hailey Alice Shoulders Ballou.  She was united in marriage to Willie Ernest Givens on Aug. 22, 1942, at Hillsdale.  He preceded her in death on June 7, 2004, following almost 62 years of marriage.  Mrs. Givens retired in 1979 from Genesco Shoe Corporation where she was employed for over 20 years.  She was a member of the Maces Hill Missionary Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents and husband, three sisters preceded her in death, Bertha Durham, Ruby Gregory, and Sally Vaughn.  Funeral services were held at Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home.  Burial followed in the Dixon Springs Cemetery.

Thurman Lewis JOHNSON, age 92, of Portland, passed away December 1, 2010, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on June 8, 1918, to the late Cornelius and Della Ann Ray Johnson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Nimmo Johnson; and son, Ralph A. Johnson. Funeral service is 1 p.m., Friday, December 3, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Greg McCoy officiating. Interment is at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Katherine L. AUSTIN, 93, of Hixson died on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 at Soddy Daisy Health Center.  The Mitchellville native was born June 23, 1917, to the late Richard Hurt and Pearl Briley Hurt.  She was a homemaker and a member of Portland First Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, leslie Austin, daughter, June Sweeney, sister, Nobie Austin, and her brother, Jimmy Hurt.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Norma Sue CARTER, 62, of Gallatin died on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010.  She was born on Sept. 26, 1948, to the late Hollis and Mary O'Neal.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 9, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Halltown Cemetery.

Doug CROWDER, age 45, of Portland, passed away December 5, 2010. He was born in Sumner County on May 21, 1965, to Leonard and Lena Crowder.  Funeral service was 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment  is at Rock Bridge Cemetery.  Interment is at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Dorothy Jewel Hicks DITMORE of Portland died on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010.  A native of Franklin, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Dillard Palo Hicks and the late Rebecca Ann Harp Hicks. She was the wife of the late H.B. “Jack” Ditmore. She was a Baptist and the former co-owner of Ditmore Boarding House in Portland.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Vallie Shoulders, and two brothers, Johnny Hicks and Elmer Lee Hicks.  Funeral services were held at 2 pm, Dec. 22 at Booker-Gilbert Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Timothy Alan VANATTA, age 47, of Portland, passed away December 15, 2010. He was born on August 22, 1963, to the late Richard and Stella Vanatta. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother, Ricky Vanatta.  Funeral service was 2 p.m., Sunday, December 19, 2010, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Hardin Cemetery.

Evelyn C. BURYSEK, 77, of Portland died on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at her home. She was born June 27, 1933, in Nashville. She is the daughter of Hugh and Bessie (Ethridge) Settle, both deceased. She was a housewife.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 16, at Portland Funeral Chapel with Bro. Bobby Reynolds officiating. Interment was in Immanuel Cemetery.
